How long do / should periods last?

Stupid question but I've either been pregnant or breastfeeding or on the pill since I was 18. I'm not doing any of those now and and my period now generally seems to be about 6-8 days long. I'm sure they were only 5 days long before so I was wondering if this is the norm or if I should do something about it.

It changes over time!

Mine used to be about 6 days.
Then went up to 7/8 days.
Now seems to be done and dusted in 4/5.

Don't know where I am with 'em.
