They will probably do an ultrasound, and an internal scan as well, to get a good look at her ovary. I had a solid tumour on my ovary and it was benign, apparently most of them are.

Treatment would depend on what sort of cyst she's got. If it's fluid-filled, they may not treat it; if it's got solid bits in it, they will most likely remove it,either by keyhole or open surgery. (I'm not an expert, btw).

Fingers crossed for your sister.

Could she be pregnant? A friend of mine had DS3 when she was originally told she had ovarian cysts

MatNanPlus · 26/11/2008 14:13

I have 'Chocolate Cysts' due to endometreosis that fill up and they leave them until they reach 'large' proportions - [+10cms diameter] then i have them drained/ cleared in keyhole surgery.

I had a scan for ovarian cysts when in my mid 20's and it came back clear. I had (and still have) fairly severe pain when ovulating on a occaisonal basis. It could well be nothing, I think the doctor has worded things badly and she shouldn't worry. But I know it is not that easy. Fingers crossed for her.

As others have said, it could well be nothing that needs any action taken at all.

But even in the very worst case scenario that might be making you anxious the possibility of losing an ovary the remaining ovary will kick in and do the work of two. Menstrual cycle would still settle down to monthly and fertility would not be affected.
