CONTRACEPTIVE IMPLANTS AND COPPER COILS

HI.

Was just wondering. Had implant fitted for 14 months and I have an appointment to have to removed this evening. Not ready to have anymore children at the moment and I want to have the coil fitted.
When I spoke to the Family Planning clinic this morning they told me I may not be able to have them both (implant removed and Coil fitted)done today. I have never heard this before.

Has anyone had the same thing done or had problems getting it done?

People need to be trained to put in a coil, so perhaps the person most qualified to do this isn't there. I don't know of any reasons why you shouldn't have both procedures done otherwise.

Can I ask why do you want it removed? I've got one myself...

It may be that there isn't someone who is trained to do both or that there isn't time available.

More likely is that it is good practice that you should start your new form a contraception a week before removing your implant to ensure that there is no accidental fertile period in which you could get pregnant. It is what I advise patients to do, as we have had a couple of accidental pregnancies when a new method has been started the same day as an implant removed.

Hi Had it removed because I had constant irregular bleeding. Was advised to take the normal pill with it to control the bleeding which worked but everytime I forgot to take a pill (which I do regularly hence why I had the implant)the bleeding started again.
Fortunately they were able to take the implant out and put the IUD in at the same time without problem.
