Recurrent split lip, how can I prevent this?

On the left side of my lower lip I have a very weak area of skin. i have had recurrent cold sores right there for years, probably a kind of cause/effect result of nervous biting on that side which has left it a little scarred and very thin. You´d never notice to look at it but I am aware it is there.

Last year it just cracked at the first sign of cold, a big split that looked like I´d had a lip piercing pulled right out (nice). It took about 2 or 3 months to heal.

It´s just done it again and I really don´t want it to be there all winter. It´s not a huge blemish really in the scheme of things but it hurts and obviously when it is ´raw´ I am even more susceptible to getting a cold sore there.

Can anyone recommend something that would help it heal? And keep my lips perfectly moisturised once healed so it is less likely to happen? I cannot use anything with petroleum jelly in it as my lips immediately and dramatically flake if i do.

TIA

Sorry, can't help but would be interested in any advice too as my DS has the same thing. I think he has been biting his lip and it is now cracked and really sore. I keep trying to put lipsalve on it but he is only 5 and just licks it off!

Have you tried blisteze/blistex. I have always found those far more effective than the vasaline type lip salves.

Ds gets this. I use blisteze and keep it moisturised as much as possible which seem sto work for him.

Ummm [thinks] there is new cream out. Cannot think of the name of it. It starts with B and can be found in all Lloyd's pharmacies. It has antibacterial and something else in it.

I have this too.

I will go and have a search for the cream

Briludem?

No,I making it up now. I will go and look for it.

I find carmex a very good lip balm - I also bit my lips and am prone to cold sores.

ABloke · 25/11/2008 13:34

No I cannot find it. It's in yellow tube and work wonders.

carmex is in a yellow tube - do you mean that ABloke?

I think you need some vitamin B!

I used to suffer with cracks at the side of my mouth during my mid-late teens (crap lifestyle at that time)

Started taking B vitamins and eating Marmite each day. REALLY helped

Maveta · 25/11/2008 14:27

wow, replies! thanks for the suggestions.. will try all of them! (except marmite...)
