Was prescribed some for when we had building going on at home but didn't take it..now I am off to the dentist for 2 fillings on Monday - haven't had any fillings for a while and feeling a bit nervy (compounded by anxiety generally)- would it be ok to take one (and when) and it's not likely to interfere with local anaesthetic,is it ?

they can make you feel wobbly and "hungover", well IME

i don't think they intefere with LA but would call your dentist first to double check

WowOoo · 21/11/2008 08:55

Am sure these are what I used to help me sleep years ago!

Don't drive there whatever you do.(unless you take one the night before and feel completely refreshed)

Hate dentists too. LA will do it's job. Can you breathe through the awfulness.

Did this recently and it was not half as bad as I'd feared.
Hope you have a nice dentist.

PerkinWarbeck · 21/11/2008 08:55

AFAIK it would not interfere with a local.

as long you're not having any sedation at the dentist, as the sedation used is also a benzodiazepine, so would diazepam would increase the effect.

I wouldn't drive home either if you haven't taken any diazepam for a while.

puppydavies · 21/11/2008 08:55

if you've not had them before they'll have given you a teeny dose (2mg?) so i wouldn't expect any major side effects. (i guess you could do a trial run over the w/e if you're very concerned about this?) they start to work in about 10-20 mins ime and last maybe an hour to an hour and a half. are you driving?

puppydavies · 21/11/2008 09:00

ps i had 3 fillings last time i went and have another 4 (in one go!) to do in december. got any spare??? lol.

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/11/2008 09:01

no,not driving...I'm usually fine about dentists, it's just that I haven't had any treatment for a while so am building it up in my head - my last filling with this dentist was perfectly fine and not unpleasant so I think I'm overreacting. I had a minor op about a year ago and fainted after that,so I think that recollection is troubling me !!

it's a 5mg dose btw

maybe go for half then, so you're pleasantly relaxed but not knocked out (although i know everyone reacts differently). be advised, the feeling can be somewhat moreish

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/11/2008 09:18

I'll see how I feel on Monday - thanks all for advice !

I take them for the dentist - about 40 mins before and my dentist positively encouraged it for goign for a filling so i would assume it has no effect on local. fwiw, i just feel 'pleasantly calm' and it didnt inhibit my everyday activities; however, i know for some it can be more like they've had a few pints!good luck!

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/11/2008 13:10

thanks olivo !

What about that Bach's rescue remedy?
Someone suggested that for me when I had to have injections. I took it and felt quite calm during the injections.
Usually I pass out at the sight of one but I didn't this time.

I think it recommended 5 drops under the tongue. I did 10 just to be sure

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/11/2008 13:14

oh I do have Rescue Remedy - never sure whether it works but the brandy in it is nice !!

To test it out, start thinking about the dentist, get yourself all worked up and then take some rescue remedy.

I was convinced it was mind over matter for me when I took it. But I really didn't care as I managed to avoid passing out. I didn't even cry when I had the needle lol

MaryAnnSingleton · 22/11/2008 15:02

will do !

to report back...I tried half a tablet yesterday, no effect,so later on tried another - felt ok, quite relaxed. So this morning about 40 mins before I took one (5mg) and it all went ok,felt calm on the whole...so worth a go ! Will only use in these circumstances (I have to have a minor op soonish,so that might help)
thanks for advice. Was going to top up with Rescue Remedy but didn't want to overdo it
