what are the symptoms of flu, rather than a heavy cold?

because I can't stop shivering, coughing (leading to damp knickers - sorry), sneezing, sore throat, then I feel hot & sick, earache, really tired but can't sleep, aching all over.

I can get up and walk about the house, but it's a real effort.

Is it flu, or just a cold?

What's the verdict, doctor?

its not like a heavy cold.

Sore throat, achey all over, shivery, really tired, I lost the sight in one of my eyes temporarily when i got it as a teenager ....

ShowOfHands · 19/11/2008 16:39

hot cold hot cold cough ache hot cold sneeze cough cold hot cough ache sneeze hot cold cry

It's relentless.

If Daniel Craig begged, you wouldn't.

If Dean Gaffney promised he could take the pain away, you might.

lulumama · 19/11/2008 16:41

have had flu 3 times

all 3 times i was physically unable to get out of bed, unless it was to crawl to the toilet, evn then i had to wrap in dressing gown and blankets and was so cold and shaky

your eyes hurt, your teeth, even your hair.

agree with SoHs summing up

if you are walking around sniffling into a hanky saying you have the flu, you don;t!

sounds like you have something worse than a cold

twoluvlykids · 19/11/2008 16:41

oh...think it might be a heavy cold, then.

I've heard the "£10 note in the garden" Theory.

I probably wouldn't have the energy to be on line, if I had the flu,btw who's Dean Gaffney?

lol ShowOfHands

Brilliant

Are you a doctor?

twoluvlykids · 19/11/2008 16:42

my chest's a bit rattle-y (makes a change from wobbly)

This gorgeous specimen, tlk.

twoluvlykids · 19/11/2008 16:46

I'm probably old enough to be his mother, so that didn't make me feel any better!!!

Oh dear, just had to ring ds's mobile (he's upstairs, I'm downstairs) as I didn't have the voice to shout, to ask him to walk the dog...

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 19/11/2008 17:14

Dean Gaffney is somebody who you wouldn't touch, you just wouldn't. Unless he promised to stop the pain. Which, let's face it, isn't a great chat up line.

twoluvlykids · 19/11/2008 17:20

SoH, just googled him and watched him on a Bush Tucker Trial - got almost through the hair wash then had to give up...

Actually, that made me feel a bit better.

When I had real flu it lasted three weeks. At its worst I couldn't look after DS - even though all it involved was sitting on the sofa watching DVDs, I was so weak and in so much pain I had to call DP home.

For me it starts with tight-feeling cough and shivers/chills all over, so bad the only way to feel warm enough is a hot bath. Just getting up and movjng is agony.

Flightattendant4 · 19/11/2008 17:24

I like Dean Gaffney

pagwatch · 19/11/2008 17:26

Flight proves there are worse things than flu...

pagwatch · 19/11/2008 17:27

If you have ever had flu you would have no need to ask the question. If you are questioning 'is this flu' then it isn't.

If you are crying 'shoot me now' then you might. I am about 9 stone and i lost 10 lbs the first time I had it.

twoluvlykids · 19/11/2008 17:32

No, not flu, just feel sorry for myself
and feel poorly

If I was a man, it'd definitely be flu.

OP posts:
pagwatch · 19/11/2008 17:40

poor you

Spaceman · 19/11/2008 17:42

If you would cross a room to pick up a tenner, then you have a cold. If you cannot then you have flu.

tiredsville · 19/11/2008 19:43

I think the general rule is, if your well enough to log on to MN, you definitely do not have the
flu.

PuppyMonkey · 19/11/2008 19:47

PMSL at the Dean Gaffney theory.... this should be highlighted in doctors' surgeries...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/11/2008 19:49

Theres a really nasty flu like virus atm, it put dh in bed for 3 days but he could get up in the afternoons for a bit and temp wasn't ridiculously sky high like it was when he had real flu.

KateF · 19/11/2008 19:59

When I had flu I realised I had never had it before! I had a sky high temperature, was shaking and could barely stand, had the most appalling headache and a dry cough. Unfortunately for me it turned into pneumonia and I was seriously ill but at least I now know when I've just got a bad cold!

webtastic · 20/11/2008 14:46

Dean Gaffney
