Oral thrush?

Just wondering if I could have oral thrush as I've got a very sore mouth and tongue. It started with dryness and a weird sour taste in the back of my mouth which I put down to pregnancy (i'm 28 wks) but then my mouth, tongue and lips started burning / prickling the whole time, especialy after eating or drinking. I thought of thrush as I've had it vaginally loads of times and this feels kind of similar though there's nothing much to see in my mouth. Was going to try thrush medication anyway but chemist said it shouldn't be used when pregnant. Anyone had anything similar or got any tips? It's really starting to get me down.

For a diagnosis, especially as you are pregnant, I would advise a swab of your cheek which the GP or nurse could take. It is common though to have a 'dirty, white or yellow' gunge on the surfaces affected. Do get a swab if it continues, oral thrush is much less common than vaginal thrush.

Jodiesmum - I had oral thrush when I was a student. I wasn't looking after myself and was drinking FAR too much (every night)!!! I had a horrible residue in my mouth, but more horribly the pain was deeper in my gullet. The pain was unbearable if I even drank water!! I had to go to hospital after 10 days with no food and 4 days with no fluids.... I was in a terrible mess! It was a while ago now, but the pain in my gullet is what sticks in my mind! So I think the thrush infection must have been further down my throat rather than my mouth. I was given a course of 7 diflucan tabs, which cleared it up.
Needless to say I started taking a bit more care of myself after that!!!!!!

HTH Go to the docs and they'll have you sorted out in a jiffy!

Jodiesmum,
Sounds like it could be oral thrush. When I had it the main symptom was cracks at the corners of my mouth which just wouldn't heal although the inside of my mouth and my tongue were sore as well. I can't remember what I got from the GP to clear it up but it worked. I've also heard that there is a Canestan/Hydro-cortesone (sp?) mix that you can get from the pharmacist that can help but bearing in mind that you're pregnant you might want to get your doctor's advice on what's safe. Also, without making assumptions about your diet, what about cutting down sugars and yeasty stuff, as they often make thrush worse.

Thanks everyone, have booked to see my GP and am hoping there's something I can take which won't harm the baby. If not might try a homeopath instead.
