Unquenchable Thirst...breastfeding...diabetes?

For the last 3-4 weeks I have become more and more thirsty. I am going doctors tomorrow, but as I have now googled , if I had diabetus, wouldnt I be really ill by now?

Its starting to get on my nerves now, beyond a joke, as needing to wee all the time now.

I did think when it first started that it was because I am breastfeeding, but its come on so sudden, and is getting worse daily now.

Surely a growth spurt for baby would have passed by now, if that was making me thirsty?

Wouldnt I be in a coma now if I was diabetic?

What else can cause this much thirst?

Divvy what is it you want to drink?? Diabetics ususally want something sweet - for me it was Apple juice!!

Your babys growth spurt would have passed - but the purpose of the baby feeding more is for you to make more milk on a pretty regular basus IYSWIM so it could be down to that - I was always pretty thirsty when I was feeding (would drink galons of milk much to the HV horror, as she seemed to think I believed i needed to drink milk to make milk......no I just liked drinking milk!)

BUT insaying all this yes go and get yourself checked out but try not to worry!

I got an appointment for tonight, late night surgery. If anything to put my mind at rest. Its squash that i am drinking, but in the night its just straight out the tap, in my cupped hands.

I always need to drink loads at night time, I'm also bfing. I do keep a couple of cups in the bathroom though. Best to get yourself checked at the doctors just to be on the safe side.

I have been for a fasting blood test this morning. Doc thinks it highly unlikely to be diabetes, and is most likely to do with breastfeeding.

thanks everyone

Other symptoms to watch for are feeling tired all the time - but if your LO is tiny, it's hard not to feel tired.

It does sound alarming, being that thirsty. I've breastfed two kids, and always was pretty thirsty, but not waking up in the night to pee and to drink.

Divvy · 19/11/2008 17:11

Yes, not many days I dont feel tired right now!

I have even wondered if its some sort of habit I have started, but cant think of anything worse than making yourself need the toilet, not after 5 kids with my prolapse anyway!

The thirst is to compelling to ignore, so dont think I am imagining it...

Not long to wait for results

Are you high risk for diabetes? (overweight, old, with relatives who have diabetes?)

There are other forms of diabetes, actually, I think, including one where you are very thirsty and need to pee, but don't have the other symptoms.

You wouldn't be in a coma now if it was type 2 diabetes. It does sound like a possibility to me.
