Gallstones (postnatal or otherwise)

My sister who is 32 had her DS2 4 weeks ago. During the pregnancy she had been diagnosed with cholestasis secondry to gallstones, monitored twice weekly and induced at 39 weeks.

Since DS2 was born she has had 4 episodes of severve pain one being today. She went to GP on thurs and has been refered to surgeon.

My questions are,

She is breast feeding and fed DS1 this way until he self weand at 13 months. She has indroduced a medula bottle this week both expresed and formula but is concerned about taking pain relief and breast feeding and how long after a general anesthetic she can not breast feed?

Also any idea on time spans on seeing consultant to surgery, if being post natal makes a difference and also how long it takes to be able to care for baby and toddler post op. How painful is the op?

Any advice very gratefully received

Bumping for you.

I had gallstones and pancreatis as a result.

I had to wait 4 months for the op, because they had to wait for inflammation in my gall bladder to settle down. During that time I was on a virtually fat-free diet (less than 3% per 100g). I was thin but bloody miserable!

The op was ok. I got it done keyhole, and I was in hosp for about 4 days. But this was a long time ago - it might be quicker now. It took me a couple of weeks to get back to normal post op. I had a baby and a toddler, and it was quite hard work.

Your sis should probably cut out fat from her diet and see if she can control it that way, and at least put off having the op until the baby is older.

Hope she's OK. The pain of gallstones is intense.

i had this when dd2 was 3 weeks old and nearly died as they missed the pancreatis
I was in for a total of 3 weeks, so didnt have to wait long for op, as they did it while i was there. I would def say cut out fat, and things like fruit skins, apples, cumcumber ect.

I expressed off the while time i was there and feed dd2 when i got home. Because of the drugs and the kidney failure I wasnt allowed to feed her at all

She will be able to speak to team about BFing drugs, and she should be able to feed about 2 days after i think.
