Terrible splitting nails

Any idea what to do about splitting nails - as if two layers have come apart? What causes this?

Lack of keratin, anaemia, poor diet, stress, too much washing up. Lots of reasons. If you have a decent diet and aren't regularly getting your nails wet, might be worth taking a vitamin/mineral supplement with calcium and vitamin D in it.

In the interim cut them short, the problem will spread like subsidence and you are compromising your new nail if you let them be long and split.

Thanks all. Have cut them back. Started wearing nail polish recently and don't usually. Could that dry them out? Have never had this before. Have recently been left by DH, so I suppose there is enough stress there to split a few nails.

Ah yes, acetone in nail varnish and remover is a killer. Oil - olive oil is fine rubbed in will help.

It won't help with your feckless DH though sorry

I suggest wine, chocolate and a large firearm of your choice for that

Water exposure and nail varnish remover are common causes . Have you tried using moisturiser on them religiously. Sometimes assocaited with medical problems. Any known medcial issues?

Thanks everyone. Have had another go at them and think things are improving.
