I'm suprised someone hasn't done this already!
I used a mooncup for the first time ever this month and I can't stop going on about it. Its better than anything I have tried. Its fanbloodytastic Never had such a hassle free period in my life I can tell ya.
(raises her cofee cup) Heres to the mooncup, long may she reign'.

Lol it is like a pop up tent!

Oh, I once had a bit of embarassment in some public loos, was trying to empty it and pulled it by the tube. As it came out it made the most horrendous suction-like noise . I have since discovered that if you give it a bit of a squeeze before removing it breaks the vacuum and is nice and quiet...

Agree that took a couple of months to really feel at ease with it - I used a liner as a back up at first.

I too have had a box of liners in the airing cupboard since I first got it. They are so redundant.

Yey morning ladies
Go for it pushchair and keep us posted how you get on.
I think it tells you on the web site which size to get. Even young girls can use them with their early/first periods.
Lol at pop up tent
Never even thought about buying one as a Christmas gift. Might get my sister one mmmm...
Right off to the shops (yawn!)
Will pop by soon.
xx

I haven't got one but am interested and would consider it.

However, I was very interested to read on the website that when bigging the mooncup up they used the fact that tampons, sanitary pads etc were so very inconvenient and then went on to say that if you want to clean your mooncup in a public toilet you should take a bottle of water in with you

Can't quite see the convenience factor there.

That's the main thing that put me off of mooncup tbh. It might be perfectly OK at home but I wouldn't fancy all the phaffing around with it that would be necessary in a public toilet/in the toilets at work etc.

I think it's a very good concept though and even if it seems like a fairly large outlay expense wise initally, it would easily pay for itself over time.

duckyfuzz · 12/11/2008 21:18

I love mine and don't find it a major problem at work/when out - I find it needs emptying less often than you would change a tampon. Agree about giving it a few months to start with though, it does take some getting used to!

pushchair · 12/11/2008 21:28

My DD1 who is 9 was asking about periods today and I gave her a brief rundown on mooncups. She was not impressed but then she is at the stage when its all eeeuw! anyway

morningpaper · 12/11/2008 21:30

I love my Mooncup too

the other day I left the house without it and had to stop and buy tampons - they were about 4 quid! And then I got period pain and I had to faff around with loo rolls and tossing stuff in the bin etc.

Mooncups RULE

beansmum · 12/11/2008 21:31

gunnerbean - I don't bother with water when I'm out, just empty it and wipe around with a bit of loo roll. It's fine. tbh I hardly ever have to empty it when I'm out after the first day, it's much easier than tampons. And you don't get that really obvious, "look at me taking my bag to the loo, I have got my period" thing.

FairLadyRantALot · 12/11/2008 21:35

Lol, not a mooncup user, and not really to this thread, as such....but I grin and think of mumsnet everytime I go to the loo at University.....there are signs about mooncups all over them

sparklylucy · 12/11/2008 21:41

I love my mooncup too. It is so amazingly comfortable - i used to get a lot of pain with tampons but nothing with a moon cup.

Gingeme · 12/11/2008 22:39

Evening ladies. Same here sparklylucy. I used to get realy bad cramps and heavy periods since ds5 but with the mooncup alot less pain .
I was advised to use the disabled loo when out so I had access to the sink. Never heard of bottled water but I think it would be ok to just empty and re insert just as long as you wash your hands after.
Lol at eeeeuw pushchair. Glad I havn't got girls
Wonder what would happen if they started advertising mooncups on tv hmmmm....

A brilliant invention, will be advising my daughter when that time arises.

Only got comfy when I cut the stem off completely and easier to take out too as you squeeze the base and release the suction.

mummypoppins · 13/11/2008 10:51

love mine...........also only got comfy once I cut the whold stem off too. I keep some intimate wipes in my handbag and use them to clean it in a public toilet.

Found it a godsend when camping this year.

bankimooncup · 13/11/2008 12:17

ok, i had been wanting to try one for ages and inspired by this thread i went and bought one yesterday. however, i am not sure i am doing it right... a few weird things have happened (hence the namechange!)

  1. i perhaps overenthusiastically cut the stem really short. now in order to retrieve it i have to really have a good rummage and do the pelvic squeezes. is it too short? i still get it out but...

  2. when doing aforementioned pelvic squeezes i wet myself big time!

  3. most embarrassingly, i went for a no2 last night and managed to expel it right out and it fell into the loo!!!

does this all mean my pelvic floor is crap (i thought it was fine, dd2 is 6 months and although it's not as toned as it used to i have no major problems)? or am i positioning it wrong/cut the stem too short?

i really want to use it- so help!!

morningpaper · 13/11/2008 14:17

I don't think it matters, as long as you can get it out

  1. when doing aforementioned pelvic squeezes i wet myself big time!

Do the squeezes on the toilet or AFTER a wee

  1. most embarrassingly, i went for a no2 last night and managed to expel it right out and it fell into the loo!!!

I take mine out before the numbers twos

Gingeme · 13/11/2008 14:27

bankin if your shooting it out with pelvic squeezes I'd say you have a fantastic pelvic floor
I've had 5 kids and my pelvic floor is probably non existant but managed to keep my cup in place.
I found having a pooh a bit erm difficult too so I removed mine, relaxed and re insertes it when I had finnished.
Intimate wipes good idea mummypopins. Thanks x

i am so glad I read those last few posts begore trying my mooncup
And yes the Mooncup has landed.......on my doorstep! postman brought it this morning but will have to wait a few days to use it. I will update you all.

TheShipsCat · 13/11/2008 16:10

Another mooncup convert here - got mine last month. But I did leak quite badly one day, which put me off a bit, but I guess that was because I did it wrong. And I had to empty every hour at one point - which was a nightmare as I was on a long haul flight. But I love it. The worst thing about it is that you can only really talk about it on MN - nobody in RL seems to appreciate "Have you tried using a recycleable pot to collect blood in on your period" as a conversational opener...

Macdog · 13/11/2008 16:26

I've just sent off for the info packs for my Parent & Toddler group.

They won't know what's hit 'em.....

ManxMum · 13/11/2008 17:15

Other advantages include:
Being able to shower and get to the bedroom without having to get half dressed first.
Going to the loo in the middle of the night (and not flushing for fear of waking everyone)and your teenage son not screaming over the 'sacrificed small animal given to the porcelain god' at five in the morning.

I sterilise mine after the months use. Apparently Boots do a denture soaking pot which the ideal size for the task.

beforesunrise · 13/11/2008 19:12

thanks guys. i wore it outside today and was absolutely fine, but i still think it feels a little weird- i hate having to touch my fanjo as i am always paranoid that's something wrong... i suppose i just need to practice and give it time, perhaps i expected to be an immediate 100% convert but i need to wait till i get used to it...

beforesunrise · 13/11/2008 19:13

(AND i just outed myself- so much for namechanging )

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/11/2008 19:15

I love mine so much. I love the fact that I just always have it in my handbag so if I'm going away I don't have to think 'hmm, is my period going to start? Do I need to take sanitary protection with me and have I got enough?'
It's funny, once you're used to using the mooncup and it's totally mess-free, towels and tampons just seem so manky.

Gingeme · 13/11/2008 20:11

Lol manxmum I love being able to shower or bath without having to use a tampon, which I hate doing, and if I don't use a tampon having to wash the towel I have used cause Ive made a mess onit.
A rl friend told me she has also tried oral sex with it in don't know if I'll be going down that road somehow...
