Bad pains after birth.

Since giving birth a week ago I have been getting really bad pains in my hips, pelvis, tummy and back. I dont really know how to describe them. Apart from this morning, the pains have only been in the evening and they have been so bad I have been in tears with them.

I spoke to the midwife a couple of days ago but she said it is probably down to lifting DD (14months) and doing to much.

I got the pains as soon as I woke up this morning so it cant be due to those reasons.

Can anyone please shed some light?

They could be afterpains. I am sure I had them with my dc2 for about a week after giving birth. I took strong pain killers to ease the pain.

scaryfucker · 07/11/2008 21:24

are they after pains, they can spread from the womb a bit

is this your 2nd or more baby?

are you BF, and do they get worse when you BF?

scaryfucker · 07/11/2008 21:25

the severity of my afterpains with my 2nd was a huge shock to me

they honestly were as bad as labour pains

psychomum5 · 07/11/2008 21:26

after pains should have stopped by now, altho it could be them.

I am wondering infection.....I had infection after DS2, and I had pain all over, not just in my belly.

after pains are like contractions......are they like that??

lulumama · 07/11/2008 21:26

it is most likely a combination of afterpains and doing too much
i know it is easier said than done, but you have to take some time out

your body has been through a lot, and you did not have much time between pregnancies for your body to recover

do nothing except nurture your baby and toddler, houswork and cooking can be done by DP etc...

rest and eat well

did you have SPD? sometimes it continues after the brith

cupsoftea · 07/11/2008 21:28

would get this checked asap - could be an infection or something not right.

MorocconOil · 07/11/2008 21:28

Yes I remember that. I felt like I was literally climbing the walls. It was horrendous, and a shock after a pretty nice homebirth.

Beauregard · 07/11/2008 21:29

Sounds like afterpains.
I had them terribly after i had dd2.

lulumama · 07/11/2008 21:29

is your lochia normal? if it is smelly or you are suddenly losing big clots then taht could indicate infection as could a temperature and general poorliness

FairLadyRantALot · 07/11/2008 21:30

with ds 2 I had horrific afterpains that spread all over....and whilst bf it got even more painful....but they do go away....

appparently afterpains after natural birth get worse with each child...
my nan, after 13 children in all, told me once that afterpains got so bad that they worse then giving birth

ToThrottleABlackBird · 07/11/2008 21:30

I swear I thought I had anoter in there they have been that bad!!!!!

Yes I am bf but that doesnt make a difference as to the severity really.

I'm hoping that they go soon, otherwise I will be crying to the mw on Monday.

Yes I think it is normal Lulu, nearly stopped then starts again after bf, doesnt smell and no clots either.

did she recommend any painkillers?

cupsoftea · 07/11/2008 21:33

bf will effect the afterpain as it will be stronger at the beginning of a feed & the womb will reduce faster because of this, reducing blood loss - all bnefits of bf. But the thing that concerns me is that it's one week ago & bf afterpains are in the first few days - please get this checked in case of infection.

MorocconOil · 07/11/2008 21:35

Get some co-codamol. That should do the trick.

I remember with DC2 after lots of afterpains, a month later I passed a golf-sized ball of fibrous type tissue. The midwife said it could have been a bit of retained placenta

FairLadyRantALot · 07/11/2008 21:36

Honest to throttle....my afterpains were nasty in general and worse when bf....I think that is the only "true" bad thing about natural birth...because after c-section with ds3 I had non of those bad pains afterpains or breastfeeding pains...

ToThrottleABlackBird · 07/11/2008 21:39

She said if they got really bad then to go to the chemist and get some low dose codine, if they dont work then to go to drs.

Just a thought....and sorry for tmi,....but when I ahem pass wind and go to the loo (when I have the pains) they near enough go, but it does hurt and I will have to force myslef to go iyswim.
