New glasses - how long to adjust?

First pair of new glasses in 5 years. Had them on for 1/5 hours and I'm feeling very weird. My presciptiom had not altered much - in fact my eyesight(distance) had improved! Not particularly blurry, but everythhing looks slightly odd ... as if it's moving. Dd2 hates them and keeps screaming at me to take them off. I'm itching to put my old ones back on.

How long does this usually last?

Odd how? Moving even when you keep your head and eyes still, or just when you move? I had a pair that made me feel as if when I moved my head, or looked from side to side my vision was taking a while to catch up (everything went distorted and a bit blurry and moving), and I never got used to it - opticians gave me new lenses in the end.

Yes that's how it is. When I move my head it's like everything is taking a while to catch up. When I sit still it's fine .... now that's a good excuse to sit on MN all day!

By the way that should have said 1.5 hours.

maybe they have the wrong presciption? do things look taller, i.e. i had a pair one and kept falling off the kerbs as i thought i was taller than i was iyswim. also have a look at something you know to be round, a mug or something. thats when i discovered they had the prescription wrong as everything went oval!

littlefrog · 06/11/2008 13:40

That sounds just like mine. Do you also have funny colours running down the edges of things? Like light is being polarised?

This happened to me when I got thin lenses - first time I could afford anything other than the thick ones, so I was really upset when after spending all that money I couldn't use the glasses - they made me feel really sick and horrible. I'd had two pairs made, one with really thin lenses, the other with cheaper ones (still thinned), and although they both did this to me to start with, I did get used to the cheaper, thicker ones. Had to get the more expensive ones swapped though, which I was NOT at all pleased about - an expensive mistake.

No funny colours. Round looks ok too. Fairly cheap lenses in a "more expensive than usual for me" frame this time.
It's hard to focus on something in the distance. Have you heard of eyesight improving? She assured me it was possible.

Looking through left eye is fine. Right eye (with left eye shut) is blurry. I think perhaps the prescription is wrong. I'm so rubbish in eye tests - all this which is better stuff and then shining bright lights in your eyes until you can't see anything. Had a really bad eye test last week. I looked like I was crying by the end.

I'll see what it's like over the next few days.

were they rushing you in the test? the one where they got mine wrong, it was all 'better or worse, better or worse' and really fast, i was just guessing as i was having trouble telling if they were better or worse iyswim.
i'd take them back, tell them the right eye is blurry and ask them to re test you and not to rush you.

mehgalegs · 06/11/2008 14:52

I had a problem like this with my new glasses. When each individual eye was tested I could see well but when the two were put together evrything was blurred. I had to have some sort of prism thing in my left lense to adjust it.

Take them back. I had this recently too. the way it was explained to me as i'm getting older my distance vision is improving and near vision getting worse (think thats the right way round), meaning I will need varifocals, however the difference isn't yet great enough to make them, I ended up having the glasses changed back to the old prescription as I couldn't cope with the 'sick' feeling I got every time I moved even though they were fine while I was still.
