I have a mirena coil. I can't be fecking pregnant surely??

Here's the thing - last week i had a horrible tummy bug, well at least i thought it was a tummy bug, felt like shit, D+V interestingly no one else in the house has had it. I also had a job interview so nerves??

I STILL feel sick, well not sick, but nauseous, i feel better if i eat something but then it comes back. I don't feel "pregnant" sick really, but then, oh, i don't know.

I have lower back pain, but i think thats due to upset tummy and a bit of constipation - i get that sometimes.

I haven't had a period for ages, i can't remember the last time, becasuse of the coil.

The thing is, this is how i discovered i was pregnant before, a tummy bug that wouldnt go - only thing is, im not being sick which i was last time.

What are the chances of me being pregnant? And more importantly, what are the implications of being pregnant with a mirena coil fitted - my DP shocked the hell out of me last night and said, well, of course we wont get rid of it and relief as im anti-abortion, but with the coil and the fact im on two lots of high dose ADs, would i have a choice?

it is possible and it does happen. Hoewver I dont know if it would show up on a test but thats where I would be starting.

exasperatedmummy · 02/11/2008 10:51

it would show on a test yes - was kind of avoiding that, um, we are so broke i don't want to be wasting money on a pregnancy test - you see, this would not be a good thing

pregnancy test first definitely
there's no point panicking about something until you know it's happening

Nemoandthefireworks · 02/11/2008 10:54

exaspareted get thee to asda and get their own tests which are 4.99 for 2 and then take it from there.
nausea could be anxiety, could be pregnancy could be something you have eaten.

belgo · 02/11/2008 10:54

Yes do a test. If it is positive you need to see a doctor straight away because I think having the coil can cause complications.

But you might not be pregnant. You might have just had a tummy bug that you are finding hard to recover from completely.

Good luck.

TotalChaos · 02/11/2008 10:58

It's unlikely you are PG but not absolutely impossible. As the other ladies say, do a test asap - as it will put your mind at rest if you aren't, and also so you can get checked over if you are PG (I imagine they would want to book you in for a scan asap if you are PG to check where coil is).

exasperatedmummy · 02/11/2008 14:53

but if i am, then the coil being full of progesterone is going to cuase major problems no? That and my high does ADs?

I got pg with a mirena coil (sorry)

Didn't find out til 18 weeks because I had no periods anyway, so it was when I started putting on weight.

DD is fine though, and is 2 now

BennyAndJoon · 02/11/2008 14:58

I don't know about the ADs. But the consultant and everyone were quite happy to let the pg continue.

Never did find the fecking coil though (they did see it on my scan)

exasperatedmummy · 02/11/2008 15:22

worried now benny. Off to boots in the morning with me then - i was thinking it virtually impossible to get pregnant with mirena coil.

shit shit shit shit shit

BennyAndJoon · 02/11/2008 15:34

I was told it was very rare, though the scan man said that he sees a few. Some doctor recently seemed to think I should have sued . The consultant MW etc were all saying "oh we haven't had one of you before!"

It is more common if you can't find the threads. I had my threads checked though, the day before I gave in and did the test.

You will be OK

We got DH the snip as a result.

So fat that seems to be working

BennyAndJoon · 02/11/2008 15:35

so far, not so fat

exasperatedmummy · 02/11/2008 16:14

I tried to persuade him to have the snip - so this will bloody teach him wont it. Anyway, ive not done the test yet, and even if i am, i can't get my hopes up because of the ADs

Just replied on your other thread.

Failure rate of mirena is 1 in 200, so it is possible.

The main problem with getting pregnant with a coil in place is the increased risk of the pregnancy being ectopic. Hence the urgency in knowing one way or the other and getting a test. You can buy pregnancy tests for a quid from Asda or Poundland or go to FPC tomorrow and get tested for free.

Being on high dose ADs wouldn't require a termination, citalopram is one of the safest to be one when pregnant.

mummc2 · 02/11/2008 22:55

just read ur thread and the feeling sick which went away when eating is how i found out i was pregnant. My sis in law (pregnant)was commenting on how she had put loads of weight on because she felt sick all the time but when she ate it went away and then about 1-2 hours after came back again. I at this point realised this was how i had felt for the past week and bingo!! positive!! let us all know how the test goes.

exasperatedmummy · 03/11/2008 09:37

I feel better today - i think it was probably just the bug getting out of my system, that coupled with the fact that i have had an anxious week. If the nausea comes back i will pack DP off to asda tonight to buy a test.

So apart from the risk of ectopic pregnancy it would be ok?

exasperatedmummy · 03/11/2008 09:38

Also, DP has a dodgy tummy today

OP posts:
BlaDeBla · 03/11/2008 11:52

I'm sure you'll be fine. I became pg with a normal coil and when they came to take it out, there were no threads to be found. If you are pg, they will offer to remove the coil, which has a chance of causing mc, or they can leave it, which can cause mc later on. It's not ideal, but plenty of healthy babies have been born with the coil there!

I hope you continue to feel better!

exasperatedmummy · 03/11/2008 15:56

i feel much better today so really do think it was the bug still hanging around. A lot of it going about apparently.

The thing is, despite being adamant i don't want anymore children, DP even more so. Somewhere in the past few days when i have been worried, there was a teeny tiny bit of me that was quite excited and i had a sly grin to myself - you know the sort you do when you realise you are pregnant.

So, i think DP and i need to have a conversation
