anyone here had surgery to correct a deviated septum?

i visited a specialist to discuss having an op about 6 years ago. i was a bit nervous at the time of the risks and chickened out.

however i am so sick of my nose at this stage. it drives me crazy. is the op worth it?

I've had 2 attempts but mine is still deviated

no pain involved so I may have a third go but I'd use a different surgeon

No it's not worth it in my opinion. Hurt like hell, made my nose even wonkier, didn't sort out the problems breathing through it or the snoring.

cant believe it made it worse! you poor thing. theblonde has yours improved much? and, superficial i know, did it make your nose straighter on the outside?

are there particular characteristics that make you more likely to be a succesful candidate?

i don't think i was born with one, but i broke my nose when i was 8.

I had the op booked and chickened out as I kept reading things that put me off.

I'm sure it must be great when it works and you can breathe properly but I was afraid of risking that the op could end up actually making things worse especially as my dr was going to reduce my turbinates { ?} and I read alot about people that had had too much taken away and ended up with something called 'empty nose syndrome'

I had the bump shaved off mine and the outside straightened - that bit worked fine

The fear is they take too much of your septum away and then you end up with a collapsing nose like coke addicts

oh god. it all sounds a bit scary. crap crap.

I had my bilateral deviated septum corrected about 15 years ago and it 90% cured my constant headaches and sinus infections. Was a bit bruised but not in pain for a week or so and couldn't go out for 2 weeks in case of picking up a cold etc but it was worth doing. It's still a weak spot when I get a cold and I do tend to get quite congested but it only lasts for the 7-10 days not all winter!! Hope this helps you. I'd really recommend it.
