Quadrouple bypass!!!!!!!!!!!!

FIL has had one today, can anyone give me any info about this. We know that he doesn't want us to worry and we cant speak to MIL as she is blind and deaf.

I don't but I do that Graeme Souness, the current Newcastle United football manager, had one a few years back. It doesn't seem to have dampened his fire. I know this doesn't help but hopefully it may give you a hint as to the quality of life to be expected.

Guilty! The point I was making was that he can expect a very good quality of life.

my dh had a bypass with four grafts (13yrs ago now)they last about 10 yrs,he started to go downhill after about 8 1/2 (not badly)then he had 2 stents and touch wood he has been ok(he keeps taking the tabs)

So the op will not be forever then?

My dad had one a few years ago. The recovery was hard but he is fit as a fiddle now. Took him a good 3 or 4 months to get better.

oh, we knew it would take a while but not that long!!!!!!!

Sacha - can the hospital give you any information. They usually have support groups as well. Hope he make a speedy recovery.

Thats very kind of you, thankyou - we haddn't thought of contacting the hospital, thought they would be to busy, does that sound really silly?

No that doesnt sound silly at all sacha. tbh sometimes us nurses can seem like we are too busy to give relatives the time they need which is wrong.

I think it is brilliant that you want to know and want to help. They should also have some information for you also to take away and read. fil would be given information on what ot expect after operation too.

no the op does not last forever(dont want to make you sad )it does last longer in some people than others,

My dad had one the end of last year (although they could only give him a triple). The recovery has been hard but he is geting fitter and better all the time. Thoughts are with you

Thankyou for all your replies, FIL has been up and about walking this morning and had been eating as well. Docters and nurses are really pleased with his progress so far.....still a long way to go but he has had a really good start.

My FIL has had it done twice,, last time last year.. first time, 8 years ago. They did a much better job the last time.. (different hospital)and he is very well now. His was more than quadruple.. he had 6.. thingies.. done!

My mum has just had a valve replacement 3 weeks ago at the age of 76. On the ward there was loads of information about heart conditions and ops from The British Heart Foundation. I'm sure that most hospitals will have them - or try their website for some literature? Hope that everything goes OK

My Mum had one in 1991 (six, like SleepyJess' FIL) and is still going strong. She said Graeme Souness made her feel utterly inadequate though 'cos he was jumping around at matches a few weeks after his and she took a long time to recover (many complications though)

She is still not 100% well, and takes a lot of tablets - gets very breathless etc. but I am sure the bypass has given her 14 years (I'm hoping for many more) she would not have had otherwise: she had had two heart attacks, the first at 48, and had unstable angina.
