Which contraceptive is most effective at STOPPING periods all together ???

I know the injection is one, as I had it before, and swore i'd never ever have it again, but I cannot put up with this period pain any longer.

I am currently on the pill and only having a break every 3 mths because of the severe pains I get, but I have just had enough, I don't want the pain at all, I cannot function properly in this state.

If I don't reply it is because I have gone to bed with a hot water bottle.

depends if you want more children

yes- depo provera injection

no- endometrial ablation or hysterectomy

thats about it really, for contraception

there are other treatments for period pain, but they are not contraceptive

have you tried the implant? Lasts three years!
I had it for 4 months though and had to have it removed after serious weight gain. But my friend kept hers the three years. x

The mirena coil-many people stop having periods altogether. (They return when it is removed).

I had the implanon implant in for 6 years and never had a period in all that time. I did put on weight but I wont blame it all on the implant.
Did not have much trouble getting pregnant afterwards either

Mirena - I've not had a period in 5 years. Doesn't agree with everybody though.

I too have a mirena and also haven't had a period for 5-6 years.

(I think if it's working, then stick with it. I had the mirena and the injection and I never stopped bleeding with either!)

that should probably read differently regarding if you want children in future go for depo - ime don't. Please don't anyone get depo without reading all the stuff you can find out about it first. I've been left needing IVF because of fucking Depo. Not to mention all the other side effects which don't involve fertility, depression, osteoporosis. Don't just think about the here and now OP, think about the long years ahead.

Also with depo, there are jsut as many pople who constantly bleed as those who don't and ther's nothing you can do to reverse it, lik with mirena or implant you can have them out asap.

You can take the pill constantly if you want to.

yep mirena works here too. seems to be a love it or hate it thing though many dont get on with it.

Mirena or implanon are probably the best choices if you dont want depo provera.

I don't think I would consider hysterectomy or an ablation as contraception.

Regarding methods- they all involve constant progesterone either in the form of pills, implants, coils or injections.

Cerazette mini-pill, implanon, mirena coil and depo all result in a lack of periods in 30-50% of users. Of the remainder, 30% will have significantly lighter periods or the occasional bit of spotting.

If I were you, I would give cerazette a go first for a few months to see if the hormones suit you without committing to something that involves a procedure or is less easily reversible. If that helped, then you may wish to proceed with a mirena or implanon. You can still use other methods for lightening periods (e.g. norethisterone) at the same time as all of these methods of contraception without it reducing the effectiveness.

In answer to the questions asked, yes I would like another baby, however, I am single and thats not likely to change soon, so having another baby may never happen anyway.

The only reason I am having a break after every 3mths of taking the pill is because I was told to. Othewise I would take it non stop, although oddly, I still get period pains then, when my period should have been due.

When I had the injection before, it did take ages for my periods to come back, and about 6mths for me to get pregnant.

I was told to not have the mirena, if I might want another baby within the next 5 years.

Reading this, I think the implant might be worth looking into.

A mirena coil can be taken out at any time. It has a life of 5 years, than becomes ineffective (has progesterone in it).

So, you could have a mirena put in say next week, meet a new man a few months later, decide you want a baby and go and have the mirena out.

Mirenas are only effective for 5 years, so if anyone has had one in for longer, it is time to go to the docs and get a new one put in.

I had the depo injection but I just had constant spotting. No proper period but bleeding very lightly every day. Was not a feasible option for me. Stopped after six months. So others are right that these things work differently for different people. I guess you have to try them and see what works for you.

I've used a hot water bottle myself in the past because of severe period pains.

Has anyone ever tried to establish the underlying cause of the severe period pains rather than just throwing pills at the problem?.

Has endometriosis ever been mentioned to you as a possible cause; that can certainly cause severe period pain. If you haven't already done so I would insist to your GP that you are referred to a gynae asap.

theothermarypoppins if you read this please email me your depo story. I am trying to gatehr enough to go to the press with to highlight the fact that doctors do NOT tell yuo that if you want more children you should not go onto the depo. fp nurses will tell you but usually when its too late!
i have been ttc no2 for 3 years (fell for dd staright away!) and had one mc this march. the more i find out about the depo and people who've used it the more angry i get that doctors are playing with peoples lives again! you can email me on keri dot bradley at tiscali dot co dot uk

Again like other people DON'T USE DEPO!

It is used to chemically castrate sex offenders in the US so not good! I was put on the injection to stop very painful periods when I was 16, luckily I didn't have any probelms getting pregnant but I did end up with an allergic reaction which caused my Eczema mad as it sounds but the doctor did tell me that, and I put ona lot of weight.

I have had the Implanon implant for the past 2 years and it is fab, no side effects that I know of anyway!
