I was prescribed amitriptline for sleeping tablets a few years ago.
I veryrarely take one now if i need to, but it makes me feel very very dozy. I know its used for various things, have you tried them yet? are you supposed to take them every day or just when you feel one coming on?

J2O · 10/10/2008 10:05

duh i can't even spell it amitriptyline

RubySlippers · 10/10/2008 10:07

J20 = the GP has recommended i take them at night only and see what happens

drowsiness is a side effect that he mentioned

not taken any yet

i have maxalt wafers which i can take when i have an attack so i think the amitriptyline are preventative

My DH takes them to prevent migraines too. Made him drowsy at first but now he's OK.

I had them for migraines, they are actaully used to treat chronic neuropathic pain.

They made me drowsy so I took them at night. They didnt do anything for me, they may also try you on propranolol or imigran.

Good luck, I feel your pain, really I do, I suffered for two years with the most horrendous headaches/migraines so I know how unbearable it is

thanks Ginger

Moss - migraines are the pits, sorry to hear the amitriptyline didn't help

how are you now?

the only thing is, now, when i take them at night, i still feel rubbish in the morning, mind you, i did get used to them and kept upping my dose until i was tking 100mg a night I had to wean myself off them.
hope they work for you

gingerninja · 10/10/2008 10:17

proprananol made my DH like a zombie. Thankfully the side affects from the Amitrip don't seem as bad.

mosschops30 · 10/10/2008 10:24

Im much better now, I ended up having a brain scan and they identified another problem which is tackled in another way. So now I dont take any tablets, well only paracetamol or brufen when I have a normal headache.

I really feel for you, I remember just having to come home from wherever I was, work, nights out, whatever. People dont realise how much it controls your life rather than it being 'just a headache'.

TMI alert the only thing that worked for me was rectal diclofenac which were amazing because when you have a migraine your stomach shuts down and this was the only way I could kill the pain.

I hope you get on well with the amitryptiline but I know its a long journey to find something that works for you

RubySlippers · 10/10/2008 10:59

oh Moss - that is awful, but glad you are better

the GP mentioned that the next stage for me would be beta blockers

i will see how i get on

thanks all!
