My dh had the flu jab through work one year and was so ill afterwards he never had it again. I refuse it for ds1, ds2 can't have it because he's allergic to eggs. My mum and dad have it every year with no problems, though my mum makes sure she's fully fit before she has it.

cheesesarnie · 03/10/2008 11:34

oh bugger.am worried now.might phone gp.no one said to give calpol or anything before.and no ones asked about eggs.grrr i dont want him to be poorly because of jab.

expatinscotland · 03/10/2008 11:36

this happened to my dad.

he got very, very ill.

he's 72 and has hypertension and a heart condition.

so now he forgoes it.

they're pestering him about it agian, as he just got over pneumonia, but he's not budging this time.

beeper · 03/10/2008 17:02

It a bloody stinking lie, loads of people get the flu from the jab, also its got mercury in it a known nurotoxin.

madhairday · 03/10/2008 18:20

Doctor is talking shite. I always get ill for a week after my flu jab. One time got pneumonia after it and was admitted. Lots of people feel effects to a greater or lesser degree after flu jab. Nothing may be clnically proved, but it certainly happens. Not always though! hope you feel better soon, and hope it goes ok for your dd.

pandoora · 03/10/2008 19:34

Bloody hell, I'm due mine soon. I have asthma and I always get ill after that flu jab. Been having it for five years now and without fail I always feel fluey within a few hours. The doctors always give me the same patronising smile saying it's impossible to get flu through the jab..

pandoora · 03/10/2008 19:38

Smear test due same week, oh joy..

cheesesarnie · 03/10/2008 21:10

oh bugger.

googgly · 03/10/2008 21:14

None of us are ever ill after ours. Are you sure that's true about the mercury?

MerlinsBeard · 03/10/2008 21:21

I got my letter thru this week for my flu jab(asthmatic) and i won't be going this year

cheesesarnie · 03/10/2008 21:24

why mom?

Sidge · 03/10/2008 21:35

The flu jab can't give you flu. It's an inactive vaccine. It can give you an immune response which can include a fever, a sore arm, aches and a histamine response ie runny nose. Some people do react more than others. Personally I take my chances with the flu jab rather than have flu - flu is not just a bad cold, it is truly debilitating.

You should only avoid flu jabs if you have an anaphylactic reaction to egg as it's cultured on chick cells. Having a milder response to egg products (eg nausea and vomiting) doesn't stop you from having a flu jab.

It hasn't got mercury in it; some vaccines contain thiomersal and some don't. You can get thiomersal-free flu jabs.

cheesesarnie · 03/10/2008 21:38

thanks Sidge.

heronsfly · 03/10/2008 21:44

Sorry! I must have clicked as i went to make a brew!

I have a wierd reaction to it and it makes my chest so tight and my breathing hard for a few days afterwards. I missed it last year as i was PG and it was the first year i didn't have a really bad chest infection in Dec(prob nothing to do with it!)

bettyboop48 · 14/12/2008 07:14

I have had the flu jab for the last 4 years and have experienced the worst chest infections, really tight chest and breathlessness ever in the last 4 years, never had them before the jabs. Will be missing it this year just to see what happens. hmm

cheshirekitty · 14/12/2008 16:27

Have flu jab every year as I am diabetic. I have never had any reaction from it.

However, about 14 years ago I caught flu. (It was before I was diabetic). Have never felt so ill in my life. Took 4 weeks to recover. The flu strain was so bad that our milkman - only aged 30 died from it.

So I will always get my flu jab.
