Is HIV routinely tested for in pregnancy?

I'm really worried, as GP has asked me to have a test. I've had an infection lately that doesn't want to go away and he mentioned today while racking his brains that he couldn't see if I had had a test when I was last pregnant.

I thought they routinely test for HIV in pregnancy - I would imagine it has to be on your notes in case you end up needing surgery, or whatever - but I haven't any record as my materniry notes were taken away after a few weeks.

I haven't slept with anyone else since then and I was tested prior to being with ds's father, who appears to be fine though he has never had a test.

I'm really scared now.. GP said something about HIV1 and HIV2 and he hadn't got a record of my having the second, I think that was what he said anyway - and has given me a form for them to take a blood sample at the hospital.

Please can anyone set my mind at rest because if I was tested in pregnancy (2 years ago) there's not much chance I could have contracted it since then.

Also how long do results take please? I'm totally freaking out actually
Thanks

Poppy thankyou for sharing your thread and I'm so, so sorry about what you went through
Thankyou all for being so kind, at least if the news is bad I will still have MN

Just need a good cry really but my mum's stressed out already and there isn't anyone else around. (ds's dad not living with us any more)

You're right I need not to fixate on it. But it is v hard to carry on when you feel like evrything might be falling to bits - just want to give up.

Poppy did it really take 2 weeks to get your results? Or was it longer?

I managed to get results within a couple of days when I had a scare (got a phone call from the hospital to tell me there was 'a problem' with my HIV test results and would I please come in to repeat the test. Turned out to mean they had lost them in the lab but gave me a week of hell because I suspected the worst). There are even places that can turn a test around in a day if you really can't wait.
Will be thinking of you lots; I know how awful this feels.

sorry wrong thread!

Testing for HIV should always be considered in anyone who has recurrent or unusual infections, even if not sexually-transmitted. Your GP is correct to suggest and exclude it.

You will probably have been tested during your last pregnancy. Your GP will not have been informed of the result as they will have been sent to your midwife and stored in your notes. I wouldn't take a negative result 2 years ago as a reason not to retest now.

In reality, assuming that you and your dp have been monogamous and not in any high-risk group, it is very unlikely that you would turn out to be HIV+.

Don't worry about getting it done, just get it over with!

Thanks, that's reassuring that he probably didn't have the result to hand. He seemed to have one for hep though (which was neg of course) so doesn't make a lot of sense.

I went and had it done today - we were there anyway and there wasn't a queue so it was very quick.

Basically if it wasn't done in pregnancy, this means I haven't been tested since I slept with ds's father , and he had never been tested, though he hadn't had a lot of partners.

Just have to wait now and tbh it's really difficult not to dwell on it, I keep crying at everything today.

I appreciate your listening as I can't talk to anyone IRL about all this. Feels very lonely.

expatinscotland · 03/10/2008 18:43

yes.

i declined it this time because i just had one in December before ERPC after missed miscarriage and it was negative.

Notreallycoping · 03/10/2008 18:53

How soon now Expat?

expatinscotland · 03/10/2008 18:57

not soon enough!

am not due till Halloween, but getting the odd contraction already.

strangely, it's always on my left side, which was the last bit of me to dilate with DD2.

Notreallycoping · 03/10/2008 18:58

Aw a lickle pumpkin is coming!!

I'm getting all broody...you've cheered me up anyway..

expatinscotland · 03/10/2008 19:23

go on then, have another one!

Flightattendent · 08/10/2008 12:56

Just wanted to update, it was negative

Thankyou all for your very real support and for listening to me when I was in such a state.

You don't know how much it meant.

oh and yes it was me!
I should have done a dramatic whipping off of invisibility cloak really given the time of year but, well, you know...

Anyway I'm still ill but at least we know it isn't because of that. And I will probably live to see the children grow up...

Flightattendent · 08/10/2008 13:00

oh and Expat...if only

I'd be so grateful if you could put a picture of yours on here for us all to coo over though, once he arrives...pleeease
