Has anyone used any? I am thinking of thinsg like Nytol and Kalms Sleep. Do they work?

I am really struggling with sleep. I am okay once I get to sleep usually, but it can take me a long long time to actually fall asleep. I know that stress (work ) is a major factor but that isn't going to go away for a while, and may just get worse (mind you today was bad enough ) so I just need something to help me sleep.

Anyone used any of the non prescribed stuff? Which do you recommend?

I have used Nytol before, but years ago. I went on 'proper' sleeping pills also, but came off them a year or so ago - now I try and have a relaxing bath before bed (you think it won't work, but it really does help), a hot drink (I think I had a chocolate malt one) and watch something light hearted on TV.

yeah nytol - but only take one tablet (think it says two on the packet)

or piriton

just try to only use them v infrequently

have you done the relaxation breathing (close eyes, breath in slowly through your mouth for 4 long counts and out through your nose for say 7 counts - think the ideal is 7 in and 11 out. Never quite remembered it. Normally fall asleep while I'm trying to remember lol).

sorry to hear hula,

i know of some very good relaxation techniques if you'd like them, think i have copies somewhere, if not can talk you through them. They worked well with DH when he was tsruggling to sleep a while ago when all the family stuff (you know about!0 was going on.

squeaver · 30/09/2008 21:15

I sometimes use Nytol. It works for me. Gives you a dry mouth tho.

olivo · 30/09/2008 21:17

I used nytol one a night, did the job for a one off but eventually i got prescribed ones. not sure about Kalms, they didnt work for me personally.
good luck ,it's so frustrating not being able to sleep.

Thanks Katz - work gone from bad to worse, and to make matters worse guess what my job is tomorrow again - yep, babysitting painters Had two horrendous meetings today, and my colleague's last day was today! I need out.

I do know breathing exercises, and have used different techniques at nght - but it is stick talking an awful long time for me to finally get to sleep. And then the alarm goes off at 6:15am for work. It is like when DD was a baby again.

Thanks all. Might give the Nytol ago. Trying to avoid prescribed ones if I can.

Valerina tablets from Holland and Barratt are pretty good stuff.

katz · 30/09/2008 21:37

hula - thats not good, i'll be home early tomorrow (going to come straight home after interview), so if you want to pop out for a coffee and a rant then just say so.

one really good technique, which DH used is to lie in bed and starting with your toes scrunch them up really tight to the count of 5 then relaxing them, then work slowly up your legs scrunch each and every muscle, then tummy, chest, back, fingers, arms shoulders, neck, mouth. nose eyes, then whole body, during whole process deep breathing and mind emptying. Dh swears by this to relax.

Hulababy · 30/09/2008 21:40

LOL Katz - I do that!

Might take you up on that Katz; mind you you might regret it once I get going! Poor DH got it all my drive home today. can't believe work can make me get so upset; not good.
