DH complaining of painful coccyx - any tips?

Anyone had this and what can be done? GP has referred for xray and told him to take ibuprofen which isnt really helping. Dont think his office chair is helping as its v old.

There's not alot they can do with a sore coccyx. It's a bone that does nothing and does snap off really easily. An x-ray would have shown up any bone abnormality.

It's not because of piles is it? Has it been painful for a while? Is it worse when he's sitting on this chair?

Yes, been bad for a good few months and worse when sitting all day. Worried it might be something that you cant do much about and I will have to have him moaning still!! Was wondering if there are any lumber supports or anything that would help him.

Is there anything visibly wrong with it? Red, hot, raised? My DH went to drs with coccyx pain, GP didn't look at it just poked him through his trousers and refered him to physio. However, I sent him back (like his mother!) and got him to explain that it was red and swollen and GP then prescribed anti biotics as it was an infection. V common in men who sit down alot.

A new chair should help. If he's not sitting properly then he's probably putting all his weight on this spot which is what's causing the pain. A rubber ring may help in the mean time, or a cushion. Anything that will distribute his weight more evenly.

I had this recently - was agony for a while and I really couldn't sit for long at all, car journeys were the worse and I had to stop driving for a while. In my case, having never felt the slightest twinge in that area, it started playing up soon after I gave birth to ds2 and shortly after I fell down the stairs awkwardly holding him - I obviously was trying to protect him so I came down really hard and caught it on a step. I has also lost a lot of weight around the same time and it seemed to stick out a lot more and not be covered by enough padding! (really lose any type of bum if lose weight). Also started yoga and found some of the positions aggravated it.

Anyway, not sure which of these things aggravated it or comination of all maybe but I had 6 physio sessions which really helped and it is now bearable, though I can still feel it when I sitdown wheras never could before. The physio was a pelvis area specialist and said it was all out of alignment and aggravated (after I'd had xray to rule out fracture). She did lost of (painful) manipulations to re-aligh everything and strengthen the tendons around it and it has really helped. Also cushion with hole in to sit on in car. Try and get the GP to refer him for physio.

wow just looked at the other thread can't believe how common this is. No wonder I got it after childbirth and fall on bottom! GP claimed was unlikely to be childbirth-related but I'm sure the little blighter gave everything a shove on his way out!

Yeh, dont think DH got it through childbirth unless I missed something! He has been referred to physio but I wasnt sure if it would really help, but sounds like it might. Hadnt thought about infection.

He is v embarrassed now as am ordering a special cushion with a bit cut out from amazon.

Can his SHE department do anything about making sure his chair is ergonimically suitable?

He works from home. Had a look at ergonomic chairs on t'internet and got v confused! Also they are sooooo expensive. I am sure it is his chair that is a big part of the problem tho so will have to do something. Anyone had one of those ones you kneel on? (Look blummin uncomfortable IMO)
