TEMPUR Mattress - Does anyone have one?

Hi

Do you have a TEMPUR mattress and if so, what is it like. I suffer from back pain (lower and the thoracic area) and I would like to know if anyone has benefitted from a TEMPUR, in particular the 'celebrity' one which is 31cm deep.

We have just bought a foam mattress, but only because we wouldn't fit a spring mattress into the house! I found it a bit uncomfortable to start with as my bum sort of sank, but I find it v. comfortable now.

All mattresses seem to be called different things in different shops, so you can't compare like for like. I was advised to go and try as many as you can. Even go to sleep in the shop if you want to!We went to quite a lot of shops and asked a lot of questions. We were also told that price is not necessarily an indicator of comfort or quality, although, saying that, it is very difficult to get a really cheap comfortable mattress.

Tempur is a trade name, so may be more expensive for that. Foam mattresses can get quite hot, because you sink into them and there's lots of opportunity for trapping air.

You will also find that some foam/tempur mattresses are firmer than others.

We have a foam matress and agree with BdB - it was really strange at first - because you sink into them, it felt as if your feet were up in the air. I suffer with lower back pain, and have seen a vast improvement since we got it about 3 years ago. I really notice the difference when we are away, as I return to the waking up every morning with a dull ache in the bottom of my back. This has more or less stopped with the mattress. DH does find it very warm - I don't complain about that though

We have tempur mattresses on all the beds in our house, because we love them!

The 'celebrity' one must be new.
When we bought ours you could get them in 15cm (firmest), 20cm (medium) or 25cm (softest). We have the 15cm and 20cm ones. I sleep on the 15cm one. It's definitely the most comfortable mattress that I've ever used, and I hate sleeping on other beds now!

Tempur mattresses are great. After DS1 I suffered such bad back pain and sciatic like pain that I could hardly sleep as the pain was worse when lying down. I now wouldn´t sleep on any other mattress and even have a thin travel overlay one which I take everywhere with me.
Haven´t heard of the celebrity one either.

According to Back in Action, the new Tempur matresses are not up the same standard as the older ones, so if you are buying one to help with back pain you might be better off with a different brand.

Is it true that if you have provable back pain then you can reclaim vat? Its what our local shop claims but we already have a foam mattress (its actually one of those ones that are sprung underneath with foam above.)

It has really helped dhs stiff neck. Does help a little with my arthritis.

I love my 2 yr old Tempur mattress. Helps my dodgy back no end - I really notice the difference when I go away. Strange beds = ouch.

I have a latex mattress bought 10 years ago (so should replace!) it is fab

other mattresses make my hips hurt

I had an ordinary foam mattress before but have had a Tempur for five years now, I sleep so badly on other beds now that I have invested in a memory foam mattress topper that I can take with me. If you look at Tempur's own website there is more information. It has been marvellous for my arthritic pain, you feel as though you are floating

We bought a Tempur mattress about 7 or 8 years ago, and it's VERY comfortable (and I have dodgy joints, so I have tried a few).

The one problem I have with Tempur is that they can get a bit sweaty! DH likes to be hot in bed, and I like to be cool. If I leave off our extra blanket, he wakes up in the night and puts it on, waking me in the process, and if we have it on, I wake in the night drenched in sweat(nice)!

Back in Action now do a mattress that has grooves that are supposed to provide a bit of circulating air. When it is time to change our mattress, I will probably get one of those.

Thank you everyone, the info and link to Back Action is really helpful - I wouldn't have known that and also their mattress is cheaper than a Tempur by about £100! I think I will go for the trial they offer

Tempur are overpriced and did not get a good review by Which? magazine in the August 08 edition. They had recommendations for more durable and better value products, I am currently researching prices on the web for Sleepspa products made by Kaymed, who supply hospitals with pressure relieving mattresses. I will not be buying Tempur.

PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A TEMPUR MATTRESS: I have had to suffer twice. For the first week a great buy, excellent support and comfort.... HOWEVER, very quickly the memory foam lost its support. It's now like sleeping on a cheap foam mattress with a huge sag under my rear (I am 80kg). What's more, this has now happened on 2 mattresses. Interestingly, on the first complaint, having bought from Selfridges, the sales man dutifully came to examine the mattress and concurred immediately that there was unacceptable sag/support and recommended a replacement. His tune changed however on the second visit - revealing he was still arguing with Tempur that there had been a fault with the first one. He would thus not admit there was a similar issue with the second mattress, leaving me with a mattress that I will have to literally write-off. I am shocked and disgusted by Selfridges and feel conned by Tempur. I wish I had taken on board the many other reviews citing similar issues. we also bought a tempur mattress last month and not happy with it at all and advice every one please please ....try this mattress for few nights before you buy it!!!!every morning i wake up with a very bad back although i never had problem with my back before! never mind that gets very hot too.. i got intouch with the company that we purchased the product from with in three weeks and requested an exchange and even suggested i dont mind loosing some money (as we paid £1500) but was told can not be returned so i dont realy know what to do as i am sleeping on the floor for past week and very disappointed with this mattress and the retailer!!

I really really hated our tempur matress I got so hot sleeping on it I felt ill, I'm so happy not to have it anymore.

we bought our Tempur in July 07 and were happy with it i have severe back problems and we took our time researching. we eventually decided that due to the after sales guarantee that it was worth investing in it DO NOT BE TAKEN IN BY IT IT IS RUBBISH. I STARTED TO FEEL IT WASNT AS COMFORTABLE AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS BUT ACCEPTED IT WAS PROBABLY JUST ME AS MY HUSBAND SAID IT FELT FINE BUT DONT ACCEPT WHAT SOMEONE ELSE SAYS BELIEVE IN YOUR OWN BODY.
i started to not sleep well ended up on more meds believing my back was the problem i sleep now on a cheap copy some nights or on our settee (its an electric recliner) we got the man from BARKER & STONEHOUSE out to show them he is an expert as he has been on the 1/2 day course, slept overnight on a mattress with one of their pillows, he thought it was awful and admitted that he is an upholsterer of many years but idnt understand its concept or anything else about it!! he dutifully went through pushing his clenched fists into the mattress and stated there was nothing wrong with it i said it no longer has tension in it and doesnt support your body as the info says it should he repeated it again and said he would report to Tempur, a couple of weeks later returned with a 2metre length of timber as Tempur will only accept there is a problem if there is a 2cm drop in the foam i said he knew it already did not have this further photos taken including how deep i sunk into it though was reminded that sitting on the edge of a mattress did not show its strengths (words to that effect) and again repeated earlier tests admitting he could understand where i was coming from especially when i showed him a single mattress in our spare room which has been well used over roughly the same time and is incidentally in a much better condition still retaining its strength when sat on. I now have received a call from B & S from their customer care department which is laughable considering what has been done to say Tempur say that they wont do anything as its 6 years old it wont be as firm as when first bought I already stated that to them but that it shouldnt be as soft as it is, incidentally it is soft ALL over not just where you lie,so maybe that is why there is no 2cm dip!! but why give such a long guarantee except to perhaps suck the punters in to a false sense of security...moral of the story THEY DONT LISTEN TO YOUR COMPLAINT, USE LAUGHABLE WAYS TO TEST THE MATTRESS WHICH SERVE NO USEFUL PURPOSE COS IF YOU BOUGHT A MATTRESS USING THOSE TESTS THEY WOULD LAUGH AT YOU IF YOU THEN COMPLAINED IT WASNT RIGHT. THEY THEN WONT COME OUT TO SEE AND LISTEN TO WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY RE THE PROBLEM COS THEN THEY WOULD SEE YOU ARE RIGHT AND IT WOULD COST THEM AND IT SEEMS LIKE THEY JUST SHRUG THEIR SHOULDERS AND SAY TOUGH...so do not buy Tempur hoping it will last a reasonable amount of time just buy a cheaper mattress, no complaint when it starts to go soft treat yourself to new mattresses every 3-4 years and be in pocket not foring out over £2000 just for the mattress as we did cos we now have to try to find the money for a new one. Im severely disabled and on a limited income so buyer beware

Sorry this is a bit of an old thread but I'm still not sure. I was reading someones review and they seemed quite positive of the Tempur Mattresses thedozyowl.co.uk/tempur-mattress-review/), have they been improved since this thread was started perhaps? My husband is always waking up and complaining of a sore back so I really want to help him out.

I have just took delivery of a Tempur Cloud 21. I chose this one as its softer then all the others but it's still supportive. Also you can remove and wash the cover, you cannot on the 22 or 27 mattresses! Not sure why? I have used the pillows for years but this is my first Tempur mattress, recommended by my mother who is now onto her 2nd Tempur mattress. She had the first for the recommended 10 years and loved it, hense buying her 2nd one. This time she went for the sensation one though as it's a bit firmer then the cloud. Certain stores are offering 2 x free Tempur pillows for free with any mattress. Saved quite a lot in the January sale plus free pillows. £1489.00 for king sized. I would recommend. I had a memory foam topper a few years ago and this was quite good also. Cheaper option if you don't want to buy a mattress and just improve your existing.

These ergoflex ones look good. I already have a Tempur which is about 5 or 6 years old. i do love it but DH gets hot so I'm not sure I'd get another one.

My Tempur cloud mattress is not even 4 years old and over the past 6 months has lost its support, I cannot sleep a full night on the mattress and it is causing me terrible back, hip & neck pain. Barker & Stonehouse sent an "expert" to inspect it but as has been said in earlier threads unless there is a visible indentation of over 2cm then they deem there to be no fault. Barkers won't do anything about it & Tempur won't get involved because contract is between buyer & supplier not them! 10 year guarantee!!! Means nothing! Stay away from them, at that price its much more economical to buy a cheaper mattress and accept that you will replace it more regularly because £1100 for 3 1/2 years comfort is really not worth it.
