Im not sure if this post is in the right place but I need some advice. I had a mirena coil fitted in January and last week I discovered Im pregnant. Timing couldnt be worse. Could it be a false positive? (Both of them )
Im also having a lot of cramping and some spotting. Does anyone know whats going on? Or what I should do? Other than visit my GP?

It is possible to get pregnant on the mirena but it is rare, it also makes the risk of ectopic (sp) much higher. Does your maternity unit have an early pregnancy unit you need to go and get a scan. I think they would usually remove the coil which may make you miscarry but I think leaving it in can also cause you to miscarry.

Please get on the phone and get seen today.

I got pg with a mirena and I know someone else who did so it certainly is possible.
I'd make an appointment today.

The same thing happened to me a few months ago. I started having cramping and bleeding, then I miscarried. It was all pretty weird. I had scans at the EPU which was full of women longing to have babies and there was me; a middle aged woman with a coil and pregnant.

The Family Planning people were fantastic, and it was a great relief to feel as though I had a choice.

Whatever happens next, you will need to be scanned to find out where your coil is and decide whether or not to leave it in place.

My coil disappeared when I miscarried - I had a scan to see if it was still there.

My dh behaved a bit as though it was nothing to do with him, FGS! It's pretty rough when all your hormones are all over the place.

You are not alone!

All contraceptive methods have a failure rate, even if it is small. Unlucky.

It is unlikely the positive tests are false.

As others have said, there is a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy if you conceive with a coil in place. There is also a higher chance of miscarrying.

You need to either see your GP urgently today or go to A&E to be checked over and referred for a scan to see what is going on.
