Nag me to go to Doctor's! Am too scared :(

For months now, my left arm has felt odd. It's sort of around the shoulder and down the inside of the upper arm - feels like it's got a nerve trapped somewhere? Index and little fingertips slightly numb/tingley on that side too, though that comes and goes.

I am TERRIFIED to go to the Doctors as I have convinced myself it's a tumour in lymph glands in armpit or heart failure or Angina.

I always sleep on left side, and spend days at computer, leaning head on left arm. Could it just be carpal tunnel? Had DS2 7 months ago.

I smoke so of course am extra worried that luck has just run out.

Please reassure me or tell me you had something similar and (v important) it turned out OK. I mentioned it to the Doctor at DS2's 6-week check and he didn't seem concerned, but said to come back if it didn't go away.

PLEASE no-one say anything ominous or doom-laden. I already wish I hadn't started this thread in case it turns out it's a well-known symptom of something horrific and terminal.

Hi UC! No, it doesn't hurt at all. I just mimed undoing a bra and pain-free. It's more like a heaviness in the arm. Hard to describe.

GET YOUR ARSE TO THE DOCTORS!!!! That enough nagging? From what you've said, it does sound like just a simple repetative injury. However, I am not a doctor, so I know nothing! Much, much, much better to know, rather than worry isn't it? You know that, so get the number out of your book. Leave it on the side for the morning and get on the phone forthwith!

I haven't a clue what it could be, but go and make yourself an appointment to get it checked out.

It sounds like a trapped nerve. I've got a dodgy heart, and I've never had those symptoms. Having said that, I'm not an expert, so get your GP to check it out.

Oh - mine was carpel tunnel and hurt a lot. Yours could well be a trapped nerve but please go to docs, the not knowing is harder than the knowing often!

They are the wrong symptoms, but it's probably trying to sneak up and take you by surprise.

I got it once just after I'd first heard about it. I was symptom free and then had a miraculous recovery.

Isn't it daft? I blame it all on Terms of Endearment. You know how that starts off with a lump in her armpit? I've been digging around in my armpit, stuffing my fist in there, trying to see if anything is growing.

Get thee to the doctors lady! I had a lump on my shin and was convinced that it was a tumour. I made and cancelled several docs appointments before finally going. Then did the same with the xray... It all was fine! Just simple shin splints! So get to the doctors, I bet you are worrying about nothing!

Hi minorbird, I truly sympathise. I would be shitting self at x-ray. Were you picturing the radiographer's grim silence as she saw the massive white shadow on your image?

I have Googled trapped nerves and it really sounds like this. Tingling and clumsiness in the hands, heavy/weak arm, everything. So that's a relief. I might make an appointment tomrrow.

OK, making the appointment is on today's To-Do list.

I had this. Was a bit more severe as arm was regularly completely numb for several hours. It was a muscular problem which compressed the arteries going into the arm and numbed it.

Needed several years of physical reeducation to fix my posture so that it stopped.

Osteopathy helped, but only temporarily (wore off within the week).

I had similar too except the numbness was in my left elbow leading up to my shoulder, starting about 4 months after DS1 was born. I was terrified I had some kind of tumour too but plucked up the courage to go to the Dr's and she referred me to a neurologist. He gave lots of pin prick tests on my body to see where I could feel pain and also sent me for MRI scans. This was 2 years ago and all the tests came back clear. I still have to go back for checkups once a year but this a lot better than stressing with the unknown. Get yourself to the docs - you're probably fine but better to be sure!
