Question for people who've had glandular fever - how long did it take to get better?

Just that really.

I've been feeling like utter shite for 3 weeks.

I started to feel better this week and was hoping to go back into work tomorrow.

But weirdly sore throat got worse again yesterday and am sooooo exhausted today (despite having not moved from sofa).

Am fed up and utterly BORED. I want to feel better

Hi

I have glandular fever now and have had it for five months so far, this week is one of the worst and have been to hospital twice to see ENT urgently. Its the worse thing I have ever come across and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I had it when I was about 28. Felt physically ill for 3 weeks - mixture of temperature, sort throat, aches and pains etc and was off work for a total of 5 weeks before returning part time for another 3 weeks or so.

my GP said that I was borderline between getting away with just having glandular fever and it turning into chronic fatigue so he was quite strict in me resting and looking after myself.

as I was starting to feel better I remember those endless boring hours of just watching TV and being desperate to do something. A wise friend of mine cautioned me and said that if I felt ready to go back to work I should try and clean the house first. I hadn't even managed to dust and hoover the living room before I had to sit down again exhausted!

I think I had a bit of a relapse a few months later but fortunately didn't get as ill so it really is worth taking care of yourself when recovering, no matter how bored you get

Just realised this is an old thread but I guess it's always useful to get tips on recovery!

About a 9-12 months to feel properly better. But GP reckons I'd had it 2 months before I was diagnosed, which won't have helped my recovery.

I got it at 19 and have never recovered fully and have just turned 50! My GP was not at all helpful and it probably turned into ME/CFS, but they hadn't been discovered at that time. Make sure you get plenty of rest and do not go back to work until you feel fully fit.

I had GF when I was 16. It started in August and I finally went back to school in February, so about six months, but I was never really completely well afterwards, I had panic attacks and got tired far quicker than other people.

I started taking thyroxine for an underactive thyroid in 2013 (41 years after I had GF in the first place) and am now as well as I've ever been! Apparently there is a connection.

6-8 weeks to feel 'ok' I was 16 when I got it and I'm in my 30's now and I still suffer now if I've got a bad throat. I'm so sorry you've got it, it's truly shit.
Lots of milkshakes, ice cream and baby food (the sweet ones).
Have you had the weird earthy taste yet?

Celticlass2 · 13/10/2014 18:28

Took me a year in total to recover, because I had it for three months withouth knowing what is was, and thinking it would get better, I just tried to carry on as normal,- even excercising a couple of times a week. big mistake..
I felt truely dreadful for months, I was relieved to get a diagnosis. This was 20 years ago, and I still remember how awful I felt. Take plenty of rest and be kind to yourself.
