I am going for a breast scan:(

Had my coil taken out today and while I was there I mentioned to the gp about my breast pain (posted about it last week). She said she couldn't find a lump but I said I could feel pressure where the pain was and she then said she would refer me to St Georges for a breast scan and it would be within the next 2 weeks.
I feel really worried now. The gp said she was so sure it wasn't the big C but wanted to put my mind at rest.
I hate anything like this

That happened to me in summer. I was in the shower and felt a small pea sized lump that I had not noticed before. I was really worried and dr sent me for a scan. It was clear and having spoken to someone about it, it can be that breasts are a bit lumpier after giving birth and can take some time for ducts etc to go back to normal after finsihing BF or drying up if not BF. Also my age (28) meant that I was in a definite minority and the reason that women under 50 are not referred for mamograms id because the risk is so small of getting it in that age bracket. I don't know if you are in any of the categories I mentioned above but I wish you the best. I won't say don't worry as I know you will but try and think positive.

It's the waiting bit that's annoying isn't it, have you ever had a breast scan before?

You poor thing - it is understandable why you would worry. I think I would too. But you are doing the right thing, you can never take chances with your health. And as the doctor says - the chances of it being absolutely nothing are very high. Hugs though.

ps - mine was a bit sore but I was been told (not sure if this is true so might be wrong) that pain is not a major factor/sign of cancer and that is why it is not always detected.

Oh mate, sorry, I hate things like this too, but I'm sure it's all ok and this will set your mind at ease.

Thanks everyone. It was also very reassuring when the gp was filling out the form and ticked no when it said do you suspect the patient of having cancer.
My mummy's coming with me to hold my hand too!

Blossomhill.. (((hugs)).. have you looked breast paid (of varying kinds) up on the net?.. try Googling it.. it's v.reassuring! Breast pain is rarely connected with cancer apparently.

I had a lump at 24 (am now 33 and it's still there living happily in my right boob! )..and altho I know yours is not a lump.. I too had a scan etc.. and the wait is very frightening... although I went thro stages of dealing with it..and then not. it was fine though, obviously. A chances are strongly in your favour for yours to be fine too.

Helsi - Having my mum makes me feel safer IYKWIM Although may make me more emotional too. Was going to have Dh but changed my mind. I need my mum

Hi Blossomhill, I am waiting for a breast scan too. I was also told I would get it within 2 weeks and would definately hear about an appointment within 10 days. 17 days now and still waiting. I spent a few days feeling literally sick with worry but have now calmed down a bit. I'm just glad it's an ultrasound scan and not a mammogram (sp?)as I've always had a dread of having that done for some reason.

Let's hope we both get quick appointments eh?

I just wanted to send you my support. I know exactly what you are going through as I have been through the same lately. I found a lump and like someone else here could have left it as it was scanned and was nothing to worry about( cannot remember the technical term for it.) But I chose to get it taken out and am recovering from that. It only took a 10min op and for me it was worth. But as my surgeon said, there are so many things that can trouble us with our breasts. Its just that the big C is always on our minds first if we have a lump or twinge but there can be a million other simple reasons.

Sorry to hear you need one too. Did you find a lump or was it just pain like mine? I can feel pressure in my breast and that's what is worrying me.

Let me know when your appointment comes through. Fingers corssed I am sure we will both be okay

Hi Blossomhill - I had a breast scan at St George's about a year ago and just wanted to reassure you that they are very good and understanding. In my case I'd had constant pain for about a year which had started while breastfeeding ds2 and continued after I'd stopped feeding him. The pain was always in the same spot but there was no lump or anything to feel. They found no reason for the pain and told me that many many women have unexplained breast pain. They also said that if it continued and I was ever worried in the future I could go back for a scan at any time.

I still have the pain - although not as bad - but have stopped worrying about it now I know that it's nothing sinister.

As far as I remember, my appointment came through very quickly so I'm sure yours will too. I know it's worrying but I bet it will turn out fine.

blossomhill, i met one of the nurse practitioners who does all of this stuff (either at st george's or kings, can't remember which..) who was really lovely and explained everything v simply and humanely. hope it goes well, x

I'm a medical mystery! I've got a big dent that appears underneath my breast when I raise my arm and it wasn't there a while ago. It's quite pronounced but doesn't hurt at all. I've always suffered from breast pain but at certain times in my cycle so I don't worry too much about that. Anyway, the doctor said "I've never seen that before" and called in her colleague. They both had a good poke around but couldn't feel any lumps so I'm taking that as a good sign. They both agreed that I should have a scan "to be on the safe side" but of course I can't help wondering if they say that to everyone to stop them panicking.

I had to take ds to the doctor today as he has a bad chest infection and mentioned that I haven't got my appointment yet. She said she is will chasing up and if I haven't heard in another week I must let her know, so fingers crossed!

I hope you are feeling a bit better now Blossomhill. I've spent so much of my life worrying myself sick over things that never happen that I've decided that I'll refuse to worry about this until I know something. Surprisingly it's actually worked and I've hardly thought about it at all!
