HELP - think ds2 has just had a fit

Ds2 woke up screaming about an hour ago, dh went upto him and I coul tell all was not well, when I went up ds2 was sitting on dh knee and had a vacant look on his face, he couldn't put his dummy in his mouth.

After about 2-3 minutes, he started jerking, foot twitching, and hand, we brought him down stairs, kept him warm, and he kept twitching his body for another 15-20 minutes. When the twitching died down he cold put his dummy in his mouth, and I asked him if he wanted to go back to bed, he nodded. I took him back to bed, and he almost fell asleep straight away.

This has happened before, before Christmas, and I think that day like today ds2 hadn't had a nap. Dh's dad has epilepsy. I have ead my book and this sounds like a petit mal.

Any advice? btw ds will be 2 at the end of March

My ds had several fibrile convulsions when he was younger and they were very frightening.

He did have a raging temperature though - 104. God knows what would have happened if I hadn't have heard him cry out. I used to take him downstairs by the window, strip him off to his nappy, give him calpol to bring his temp down and wipe him over with a tepid cloth. He would be bright red, wild eyed and talking to people who weren't there - really scarey. I was told by the doctor that provided his temp came down and I kept him cool, there was no need to worry and it was just one of those things. Also I was told that a cold baby is in less danger than a hot baby when they are ill. I hope you find what it was soon Deegward. x

sorry, i fell asleep with the boys! It does sound like a some sort of seizure, agree with edam, esp with the falling asleep afterwards. There are many different forms of epilepsy, and reasons for having a seizure, again as edam says, so I would take ds to see the doc. Having one or 2 seizures doesn't mean he will develop epilepsy, btw, he may just have a tendency to have them if he is not feeling too well, for example.

Let me know if i can help in any way.

Eventually got an appointment for ds2, 4.30 this afternoon! Anyway the dr agree that it prob was a seizure, and is referring us to our paediatritian (god that sounds posh, its just ds2 saw this guy last year with his innocent heart murmur). GP doesn't think they will do anything until he has 3, but as he has had one before thinks paeds should be the one to make this decision.

Thanks to everyone for your help, and support, ds2 has been fine all day today.

I am certainly no expert but it sounds very similar to how my ds was when he was having night terrors.
he would have them when very tired, like when he had missed naps and it would start with an awful cry that kind of didn't sound like him IYKWIM
I used to try to give him a drink or dummy to no avail and was kind of twitchy. I was sure the first time that he had had a fit, he was looking right through me and after turning the lights on snd cajoling him for a while to respond he became his normal self again and then went to sleep. he was about 8 months old at the time.
Hope it all gets sorted soon for you x

My dd (3) had a fit a while ago and we put it down to either a febrile convulsion - though i didnt think she was that hot or that she had pulled a muscle as she had stretched when she woke up - sort of like when you click your neck and it really hurts!

Saw our paediatritian today, and ds2 is going for an ECG on Thursday at 9am. So we will see what that brings, paed reckoned it was a begnin fit so not to be worried.
