White lines across fingernails?

twentypence · 26/08/2008 19:32

Yesterday I noticed that I have white lines across 8 fingernails (not thumbs) about 2mm up from the bottom.

I've been ill for over 2 weeks now - are these related to poor health?

I believe it indicates lack of zinc in your diet (but not sure if that's an urban myth!)

biglips · 26/08/2008 19:35

i thought it was lack of calcium??

(im unsure)

Lack of zinc may explain why I'm not getting better?

have u googled it? to see which is which?

I bought a multi vitamin with both in to be on the safe side! I now probably will have expensive wee and still have lines on my fingernails, but the only other thing a quick google turned up was mercury poisoning. I did have a filling removed two or three weeks ago - which would fit with the position of the white line on the nails.

can u get it checked out? as just in case?

im just bumping this for you

It can be so many different things.

Most probably an iron or zinc deficiency but best to have it checked out as there are plenty of other possibilities too.

I heard you get the lines across the nails when you are run down/recovering from illness.
