Anyone else on Fluoxetin for PMT?

Hate taking it as it's an anti-depressant and I don't feel at all depressed, just totally blow a gasket in run up to period. Has been going on for years, went to the Dr when it got to the point that I wanted to kill my DH every month. Fluoxetin has taken the edge off - tho had a bad day today, when a family thing upset me and I just went off on one. I do feel calmer generally on Fluoxetin, but feel a bit of a muppet for having to take it. Many other Prozac babes out there?

costagirl, I used to take fluoxetin for exactly the same reason...my main outlet was work - I used to come very very close to blowing gaskets and walking out of my job on a monthly basis. Fortunately I've had very understanding bosses over the years.

I stopped taking them after the birth of DS about 6 months ago and so far, so good although am currently about 8 wks pg and DH is having a total nightmare getting used to me being horribly hormonal again

I never felt a muppet for taking them though, just relieved that sanity could be achieved

How long have you been taking them?

oh - um that reads totally wrong - I stopped taking them about 6 months ago, when DS was a year old. I think my hormones must have settled since having him as I just haven't felt the need for them since.

Thanks for that cal, I've been on and off them for a few years, but GP and I decided 6 months ago to stay on Fluoxetin. Like you say, it does restore sanity to some degree. I suppose there's a bit of a stigma to taking things like Fluoxetin - when in actual fact it's probably saved DH's life on many occasions!! (Still annoys the hell out of me though!)

hi! I was prescribed fluoxetine 3 weeks ago for pmt.

Over the past 4 years I have tried most 'natural' remedies (evening primrose oil, agnus castus, st johns wort, change of diet, exercise etc etc)- no effect whatsoever, if anything it was getting worse.

So prozac is a last resort. Not feeling exactly 'with it' though, which I'm not too keen on & haven't told dp (or anyone in RL)as too ashamed & he's against ADs.

Oh Mrs Smith I really know what you mean - I haven't told DH that I'm on fluoxetine as he would use this against me in any arguments! And his family would totally not understand. We really shouldn't be embarrassed, but there you are! Nothing else helped me at all, but the fluoxetine does even me out. I still lost it big time yesterday, and today have taken 1.5 hours texting friends deciding whether to go to the park or not, but it's much more rare for me explode every month. Hang on in there - the 'out of it' feeling will probably pass, 3 weeks isn't long. {smile]
