i had a nose operation 3 yrs ago to carve out my cartridges as i was hit on my nose (the guilty party was found guilty at the crown court)... shortly after my op, one day my nose was dripping like a tap not turned off properly and was bright yellow, i thought 'thats strange!', my friend who had a similar op and he said that its the brain fluid that was dripping out of your nose!! but none since then. i had a awful cold last week and today it was doing it again, my phelgm was bright yellow and water dripping out of my nose - anyone had this experience?

er... i think if it was brain fluid you would be dead by now (or at least seriously ill)! its more likely to be the nasty by-products of a bad cold - perhaps sinus infection? Not very nice, but definitely not brain fluid!

It is perfectly possible that it could be, strange as it may sound. You must seek urgent advice as it carries a large risk of infection.

A slow leakage does not result in instant death. The fluid is called "Cerebrospinal Fluid" and can be caused by a defect in the bone and tissue between the brain and the sinuses.

I know what it is and all that, but I would have thought that if there was a leak, a) she would have a terrible headache due to the difference in pressure from the leak and b) an open channel for infection which if it first happened 3 years ago would surely have caused some sort of nasty problems by now? I'm intrigued. What do you think?

also in my recollection cerebrospinal fluid is a clear or straw-like in colour, not bright yellow?

I'm assuming that the water that was dripping out was not the same as the drips you get with a cold. It's possible that she has a weakness, is it still leaking? I agree that it's unlikely after 3 years, but just not impossible.

no its ok... the drips is like water and feels water as one drips on my finger and its clear with yellow colour in it but phelgm is bright yellow (my nose is still blocked as grisle had moved over)

What is your gut feeling? Do you think it is just part of the cold? Is it unusual for you?

FIO - i havent got a headache but a permenant tight head (sinus feel). i got hit nearly 10 yrs ago and over the years i had one cold after the other and i never felt recovered from the cold till eventually a different doc decided for me to see a Ear, Nose & Throat specialist (3 yrs ago)

Is the tight head just since the cold though? or did you have it before?

its not clear snot feeling look but water feeling look, which i find it strange (when i went in to hossy to be induced last oct, they gave me morphine type to start contractions off but it didnt agree with me and i threw up very violently which resulted me blowing my nose after i threw up and a handful of dark ish green phelgm came out from one nostral and same to the other nostral, i could breathe and it lasted till i had a cold 2 weeks after birth as my headaches and tight feeling went away, so i told docs that i know exactly what i need, a sinus flush but docs is not agreeing and im )

I think so too, HM. When I have a bad cold it ends up in my sinuses and disgusting bright yellow stuff runs out of my nose, generally as a follow-through after blowing but sometimes at random moments, I try not to go out in public at that stage.

However with your medical history I think you should check with your GP or someone just to reassure you, biglips.

well thats what im trying to tell my docs and i did go for a check up by a different specialist last year as wasnt happy with result of the op. specialist couldnt find anything that is blocking my sinus still and i couldnt figure it out but i cant breathe thru one nostral and the other just about to breathe in so the prob is still the same before i had the op. After i threw up during my induction and a handful of phelgm came, i thought i know exactly what i need - a sinus flush but my docs is not having it as he is going by the notes of when i went to see the specialist last year and he gave me nose spray which i feel im back to square one again - im getting fed up and its bringing me down alot.

Have you tried oral decongestants (like sinutabs)?

yes i have, tried all sort and ive even put on breathe right strip over my nose overnight and my headache goes away till i take the strip off

I have sinus trouble, if sudafed doesnt work its usually anti-biotics

The headache you get when you have lost brain/spinal fluid is very different to a normal headache

ive had the headache for nearly 10 yrs now. The only difference i feel after i had the op is the the tension on the back of my neck had gone, but just the forehead and head is still tight

well ive already seen 2 diff specialists. the first one who operated on my nose and the 2nd one is the one i went to see after i wasnt happy with the 1st one. i feel docs are fobbing me off and i know i poss need a sinus flush every couple of months
