I take 400mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day, most days and the paracetamol I take 2 4times a day, most days, although someitmes at night I take somehting called Syndol instead, but not often since the idiot pain clinic doctor told me to stop taking codeine.
DH says I'm taking too much, but I need it to try and ease the pain. Are there side effects from taking it almost continually

Yes we both belong to it.

I think alot of the troble is different things work for different people.

I had acupuncture, which was brill for me, but hasnt worked on others.

CSD, affects people differently, amytriptyline, didnt work for me, as I dont have truoble getting to sleep, but wake after a few hours, and then cant return to sleep, sometimes I get as little as 3/4 hours sleep a night.

Not sure but think Saltire sleeps, a long time, but wakes unrefreshed.

I went to bed very early alst night, as I was feeling so ill, terrible pain in my head, legs feet hands and arms.
I have seen the pain clinic doctor, but there is an 8 month waiting list to be seen on the "pain managemnt programme". The pain clinic docotr, who isn't a rheumatologist, told me that he thinks all my muscle pain (which was diagnosed as Fibro by a rheumatologist) is not caused by fibro, but by headaches, and the headaches were caused by codeine,a nd to stop tkaing it.
So i did, but guess what, I still get headaches - chronic ones which cover my whole head and down the left side of my face and under my ear. Oh, and I'm still in constant pain with the fibro, so his theory is wrong. Because of wht he said though, my GP won't prescribe anything containing codeine. he tells me to take paracetamol and Ibuprofen. that's it.
I take 40mg of Amitryptiline at night, which helps occasionally, but if I go to bed during a flare up, with pain then it wakens me through the night.

our local PCT runs courses for people living with chronic pain, worth finding out if yours offers similar? you need to perservere with the pain clinic or get second opinion from doc . if you are taking the maximum dose of everything and not getting much relief, you need another opionion

could you afford acupuncture? it might really help.

Are your headaches migraines?

Have you seen a neuro consultant about the head pain?

MatNanPlus · 04/08/2008 13:12

Gabapentin (brand name Neurontin) is good for Neuropathic pain.

saltire · 04/08/2008 15:43

girlnextdoor - I get told repeatedly that I don't need to see a neuro consultant becasue my headaches are (in my Gps opinion) caused by teh fibro, or(in the pain clinic docs opinion) caused by codeine.
Theya ren't migraine as such, just an annoying headache, usually over the side of my face!

It's possible to get terrible withdrawal headaches and other pain when you come off painkillers after long-term use. Would this be what you suffered when you came off the codeine?
