A very embarrassing problem

TMI

I am very very constipated. I have not been able to go to the toilet properly for about 3 weeks now. I can feel a build up in my back passage but I just can not get it out. I have tried high fibre foods but to no avail.....

What are the risks of taking a laxative while pregnant? I can not go on like this as all the straining has now given me piles!?! Sorry for TMI but I am too embarrassed to go to the GP.

itati · 18/07/2008 18:09

DorrisMcWhirter · 18/07/2008 18:10

I took senakot a couple of times when Pg with Dd2. I'm pretty sure I mumsnetted to check it was ok as well. Ring NHS direct to check?

smartiejake · 18/07/2008 18:10

Have you tried fybogel sachet drinks? I took these all through both my pgs (as prescribed by the dr) and they worked a treat.

ivykaty44 · 18/07/2008 18:11

unsulphered apricots work really well. Make sure if you eat them you are nearby a lavy.

ireallyneedapoo · 18/07/2008 18:12

CAn you buy fybogel over the counter or do I need a prescription? I need to get some tomorrow and docters are shut.

I ran through the start of my pregnancy with DS2, just to keep regular. Are you walking around a lot? Running, biking, whatever?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 18/07/2008 18:13

Please get to a doctor, ring NHS Direct.

You must be in the most awful pain

NotQuiteCockney · 18/07/2008 18:13

Frankly, if you can feel the pressure in your bottom, the simplest option is probably a glycerine suppository. It should sort you out right away.

And then watch diet, exercise, and fluid intake, so it doesn't happen again.

suiledonn · 18/07/2008 18:13

I was very sick at the start of my pregnancy and got horribly constipated due to dehydration. The doctor prescribed me Microlax. It is an enema type thing - not very pleasant to think about but it really worked. Once you clear the current blockage they you can work on preventing it happening again with all the other suggestions.

windygalestoday · 18/07/2008 18:13

strong coffee?

milkmoustache · 18/07/2008 18:14

you poor thing. MAny other pregnant women suffer from this - my piles have been giving me gip too if that is any consolation (probably not). If I am conscientious and remember to drink a glass of prune juice once a day that really helps, but have never been bunged up for 3 weeks. You need to swallow your pride and see your midwife or nurse - sure they will prescribe something in a flash which should help. The relief (scuse the pun) is well worth the embarrassment factor...
This is not going to go away by itself and you do NOT want to risk getting an anal fissure - believe me, they hurt like HELL and make you cry with pain!!

ireallyneedapoo · 18/07/2008 18:14

I have cut back on the amound of exercise I am doing because I am so tired but dd does keep me faily active.

Cross posts with Notquitecockney!! I totally agree though. You need to solve the immediate problem and then work on prevention.

noddyholder · 18/07/2008 18:15

hot orange squash works but is horrible and strong coffee

smartiejake · 18/07/2008 18:16

No you can buy fybogel over the counter but don't get the boxes with only 10 they cost a fortune. If you ask they will sell you the boxes with 30 in which are about £4.50- much more economical.

Anna8888 · 18/07/2008 18:17

Several very cold (iced) glasses of water after a long walk.

ireallyneedapoo · 18/07/2008 18:18

Thank you all I am off to the chemist tomorrow to sort this out once and for all.....
