Constipation cures - quick results needed

Going to GP on Tuesday, but need to take action before that really...
Been quite bunged up for a while, ended up in hospital with abdo pains last week (stayed for 2 days - had loads of tests just in case it was related to previous bowel problem, but nothing showed up, phew)- feel really bloated, bunged up and generally unconfortable.
Looking at longer term stuff eg making efforts with diet, etc, and am sure doctor will have suggestions.
Any quick fixes beyond buying over the counter laxatives?. Where do I buy prune juice??
Thanks in advance ...

One double espresso and a cigarette will do the trick!

ElvinaFrizzell · 11/07/2008 15:10

My DH swears by Guinness

CoteDAzur · 11/07/2008 15:13

Coffee & cigarette
Cooked green vegetables
Dried apricots

dippica · 11/07/2008 15:22

Don't do coffee, cigarettes or beer but will try large glass of red later, with my dried apricots!
More suggestions?

Sweetcorn.
Sugar- lots.

sherbetdipdab · 11/07/2008 15:29

A whole packet of sugar free polos usually works

desperatehousewifetoo · 11/07/2008 16:43

Lots of water. Brown rice, mix with some peas, sweetcorn, chicken to make it more palatable.

Salad.

Porridge, weetabix, baked beans

even more water!

Take some brisk (don't you hate that word?!) exercise.

Avoid white bread.

Good luck

desperatehousewifetoo · 11/07/2008 16:51

AND bran and linseeds (from health food shops)

You can probably get prune juice in your local supermarket

nightcat · 11/07/2008 18:40

mints and/or peppermint tea
avoid wheat

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/07/2008 18:42

Thornton's Diabetic Toffee. The polyols (artificial sweeteners) will soon have the desired effect.

docket · 11/07/2008 19:15

golden linseed. my mum swears by it and never goes anywhere without it!

Scootergrrrl · 11/07/2008 19:16

Kiwi fruit - works like a charm.

CountessDracula · 11/07/2008 19:16

fresh figs

ChickenBurger · 11/07/2008 19:17

Bran flakes, morning, lunch time and evening.

ummadam · 11/07/2008 19:23

a whole punnet of cherries! orange juice, fresh apple juice (the cloudier the better!)

iamdingdong · 11/07/2008 19:26

kiwi fruit

jimblejambles · 11/07/2008 20:27

fennel tea.

RiojaLover75 · 11/07/2008 20:33

Lactulose. Get it from the chemist, not sure if you need a prescription. Works like a treat and very quickly too.

Swaliswan · 12/07/2008 10:09

Buy dulcolax perles from the chemist (not any of the other dulcolax stuff). It contains the same stuff that they give you in larger quantities for bowel prep if you are going to have a colonoscopy. Then just follow the instructions (take 2-4 at night IIRC and then you will get 'relief' in the morning). Maybe try taking two on the first night and if that isn't enough take four the next night. You may get a few crampy pains but it doesn't last long. However much you are drinking, drink more, much more. Then when you've had a good effect from the perles take some lactulose for a few days then slowly wean off of the lactulose. Also a good time to look at your diet and consider why you got constipated in the first place (I can't talk though, my diet is shocking ).

Swaliswan · 12/07/2008 10:11

Oh, and sorry that my suggestion is all otc laxatives but IME if you want some quick relief then that's where you need to start and nothing else works quite as well.

mylovelymonster · 12/07/2008 10:30

what about this?
A natural laxative and gentler than things like Exlax. Should be able to get in supermarkets & pharmacies.

GentleOtter · 12/07/2008 10:36

Syrup of figs, fresh pineapple and a brisk walk.

emma1977 · 12/07/2008 21:20

You can buy prune juice from any supermarket.

Fresh figs or califig syrup.
Dried apricots.
Vindaloo.

RoRoMommy · 12/07/2008 21:24

Anyone ever tried Oxypowder?

RoRoMommy · 12/07/2008 22:02

I guess that's a no...
