tonsillitus

My ds (5) is a sufferer of constant tonsillitus. Took him to the docs on Monday who put him on a 5 day antibiotic course. He normally bounces back quite quickly as soon as he starts the medicine, but tomorrow is his last day of them and there is no improvement. The only thing is that his temperature has at last gone down , although he is still warm.
He has just screamed for 30 minutes in pain, and then fallen asleep after a cuddle. When I looked earlier , his left tonsil is basically one massive white area which looks incredibly painful. He hasn't eaten since Sunday.
Will take him back tomorrow but just wondered if this is definitely tonsillutus or could it have developed into something else? Will the doctor just prescribe another course of medicine? TIA.

IME this is a bad case of tonsillitis - they go white and puffy.

I would ask for him to have them out. Repeated tonsillitis is debilitating and a PITA. They are pointless and when behaving like this a pain. Will not remove when they are pussy and yucky.

Tonsilitis?
It sounds like you need to take him back. I think that you need to see a doctor tonight for this if you can. It does sound very infected. I would not leave this until tomorrow as you risk the infection entering his blood stream.
Phone NHS Direct and ask to see the out of hours doctors. Failing this, take him to A&E. You really need to do this as soon as you can.

I hope he's feeling better soon. Please let me now how things go.

Thanks for the replies - will ring and make appointment. My dd had her tonsils out 2 years ago and has been fine since. Just cant remember her ever getting this bad, or not responding to the AB's.

Sorry. Sounds septic to me and my couple of years of medical training.

I hope he's OK.

Sounds like a quinsy throat to me (i.e. abcess). Usually needs to be drained in hospital. Would definitely phone NHS24.

Took him to the docs last night and was told it is a severe case of tonsillitus. Has been put on another 5 days of AB's. Thanks for all your help.

Poor thing. He must be in so much pain . I truly hope he's feeling better soon. I used to get tonsilitis alot as a child so I know how horrid he must be feeling. I'm glad you didn't leave it though.
