Is this normal for a (I think) non diabetic?

Out of interest I decided to try a continuous glucose monitor for two weeks. I’ve noticed that if I eat any meal with carbs my blood sugar spikes right up to 10 or 11. It does come back down within range within two hours but here is an example. I ate two small slices sourdough bread with butter and some homemade vegetable soup (onion, celery, garlic, leeks, kale, carrot, chicken stock).

Is this normal!?

my fasting glucose seems absolutely fine.

Why are you wearing the monitor if non diabetic? If you had a flat line you’d be on the way out…

This stuff must drive doctors mad.

It's normal OP. Thats how blood sugar works. It rises when you eat carbs and then insulin kicks in and brings it back down. If you are concerned, cut down on the carbs.

Is there a reason you are wearing it?

yes that is insulin doing its job.

Yes it’s likely normal. Obviously it’s far healthier to have a flatter curve (lower peaks) so try to eat fat and protein first and choose the best carbs you can if you are going to eat carbs.

Resistant starch is better than non-resistant starch unless you have stomach issues. Even better is to avoid wheat derived products entirely. Choose low glycaemic index foods.

Use the CGM to help you choose the best carbs for you.

If you want a laugh, try a chinese takeaway meal with white rice to see your blood sugar spike, when I did this it went up to 19. My blood sugar tends to be low mostly now as I mostly eat what some consider low-carb (plenty of meat and dairy - and my blood lipds are all excellent), but am not full-on keto now.

If your main health concern is cardiovascular then your biggest aim should be keeping your triglycerides low (by reducing carbs) and HDL high: you want your TG/HDL ratio to be way less than 2, mine is 0.5.

Wait an hour after eating before testing

Thank you.
I just wondered if it was normal to spike up to 11.4 when I ate a fairly small amount of carbs. A quick google tells me that in normal healthy people the spike normally stays below 7.8.

Ive been wearing the CGM mainly because I suffer very frequently from migraines. Over the hot summer when I was eating low carb (mainly because I didn’t fancy any stodgy carbs food) my migraines improved. I then read some research about blood glucose dysregulation in migraine sufferers and thought it was worth seeing what my blood sugar was doing.

I am young, slim and fairly active (but in a walking everywhere kind of way not a weight lifting gym going kind!).
