Just looking for advice really. My 82 year old mother had a microlarynoscopy in May to remove a benin polyp on her vocal cord. Since then everything tastes metallic, even water. We've been back to ENT, Dentist etc and are not getting anywhere. She also suffers from nausea and constipation. Blood tests have flagged up high calcium and an issue with her parathyroid. Would this be causing the metallic taste too? And could the parathyroid have been damaged during the earlier throat surgery? We're waiting for a Endocrinolgy appointment but that's not until March.

We have 4 parathyroid glands. I’ve had 2 removed due to hyperparathyroidism (high calcium) . Unlikely any were damaged. And if one was there are another 3! I’ve never had a metallic taste due to anything related to parathyroids.

I had high calcium and to be honest I just felt terrible; chronic bone and muscle aches, unquenchable thirst as well as constipation and nausea. So if your DM had a dry mouth, then this might be the cause of the constant metallic taste.

However, I can’t believe that she has to wait until March to be seen. Is there any chance that they’ll get her in sooner if there’s a cancellation?, and I do hope that they’re going to keep an eye on her calcium levels whilst she’s waiting.
