I have Hand, Foot and Mouth… likelihood of being able to go away next week?!

I have caught HFM off my ever so generous DD!

I first noticed some sores yesterday (Thursday), and today they have progressed. My hands feel like they have pins and needles/sore to touch. I have open sores where my gum and cheek meet in my lower jaw, they feel sore. And I have them on my feet and it’s starting to get a bit uncomfortable to walk. Weirdly, I haven’t had a fever - although neither did DD (who still has some sores and is still a bit grumpy!).

I won’t lie, I’ve searched threads on here for HFM in adults and it sounds like I’m heading towards an awful experience. 😱

I’m supposed to be going away next Thursday for a mini break with the family… what do we think the odds are that I’ll be able to make it?? Can anyone who has had this share their thoughts?

I caught it recently too, I’m generally quite healthy but I do fall for the odd nursery bug. It was maybe 3 bad days then I was on the up fast.

It really was sore though, i sympathise, the sore hands and mouth were tough!
I think you’ll be ok 😊 Hope you have a lovely time

Poor you @Tendon
I hope you feel better soon. DD had it a couple of years ago and was really poorly to start with. She srarted with a very high temperature that lasted for a couple of days before she started to blister. The blisters were very itchy, and the ones in her mouth and throat were very sore.

Thanks both. It really is an awful disease!

I got that years ago from the dc. I had sore hands and feet for a few days then it passed. Ex dp had one sore spot on his hand and that was it, no fever or anything else. How long does it stay contagious for?

In had it and being brutally honest, it was the worst bug I've ever had. Horrendous fever, hallucinating snakes, and so itchy. Didn't sleep for days because I was so uncomfortable. I certainly wasn't fully recovered in a week, but I would have been well enough to go away, albeit taking it a bit easy.

Just to warn you though, sometimes your fingernail and toenails drop off a few weeks after, and obviously it takes then a while to regrow. So those repercussions took about 6 months to fully resolve.

Yes, that happened to DD.

Ds caught it in 6th form and was really poorly with it and had to be off school over a week. He looked like the elephant man his skin was so bumpy.

I developed it while on holiday abroad. I had caught it from our grand daughter. I had a mouth full of ulcers. It was worse than when I had my wisdom teeth out and I felt as if I was getting the flu. No reason not to travel though.

You could well be fine, will just have to see how next few days go and be honest with how you’re feeling.

I caught it from my daughter a few years back and was braces for the absolute worst. But after around 3 days of discomfort, I quickly improved. The spots on my hands took a couple of weeks to go completely but I was fine in myself.

Tendon · 19/10/2026 13:53

It’s just getting worse. Every day there are more spots.

Today I have 20 spots on the back of my hands where yesterday there were none. My mouth ulcers are the worst.

And now today I have two sores in my bum crack where yesterday there were none! It’s awful!
