Anyone have stories of tackling a 12cm fibroid in late 40’s. It’s freaking me out !

Ah I’m sorry - is it going to be removed?

I’m not sure the exact size but my friend had one “the size of a grapefruit” removed from inside her womb. She had to go into medical menopause for two months before the operation to reduce the amount of bleeding, and the removal involved a C section because of the location. She made a full recovery and felt infinitely better after. She didn’t find the recovery from the op that hard. She had no pain but had complete exhaustion and terrible skin for 18 months before.

My mum is 71 and having one removed in a few weeks

Probably hysterectomy. I was concerned as I felt it was unusual at my age and my consultant made me feel like that (48) but that changes things if your mum has one ! @SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite x

My mum had a hysterectomy in 1996 age 49 with
"Fibroids so big her womb was the size it would be if she was full term pregnant"
I'm 54 and got fibroids but not big enough for them to do anything but have had for over 20 years.
Much sympathy to you @NarnaI that's all I can say.💐

Mine wasn’t that big but it prolapsed.
Couldn’t believe how good I felt after they removed it, and how quickly I recovered.

I was 49 and I never expected to be more energetic in my 50s than my 40s. It’s great.

best of luck with it.

@NarnaImy mum’s fibroid was caused by a mistake with her oestrogen in her HRT. A few years ago it was accidentally increased to 4 times the dose by the GP. It only got noticed because she started having bleeding and an MRI showed a fibroid and adenomyosis. Both oestrogen driven conditions. One gynae advised a hysterectomy to be safe as they weren’t sure what could be causing the bleeding, but she got another opinion that the bleeding was definitely coming from the fibroid and to take that as a first step. Hers isn’t large though just painful and bleeding

seahorsessky · 15/10/2026 22:13

Mine was a bit smaller, but the gynae said it's where they are, and how much trouble they're causing that matters. OP was very quick and easy, back at work in 2 weeks.

Mine was the size of a 7 month pregnancy. I needed a hysterectomy. This was 10 years ago.

I had a 15cm fibroid so had a hysterectomy last summer. Kept overies although I'm now on hrt. As soon as the gynaecologist spoke to me and found out my age (44) and that I have teenage kids and won't want any more he just said hysterectomy is the best treatment. I recovered very well and was driving again in 4 weeks.

hi OP I had a hysterectomy a few years ago now for this ( slightly smaller !)
I first knew I had fibroids during my first pregnancy and then they were never mentioned again until it became uncomfortable lying on my stomach and I was given an ultrasound which showed one large one and a smaller one.
I believe it grew when I started HRT as
they like the oestrogen.
I think they are v v common it’s just bad luck if they are big , painful or cause other symptoms.
Pretty sure something like 50% of women in 40s will nave them they might just not know.
Dont worry and hope you get some good above on best treatment - for me hysterectomy was the answer but other options may be suggested first.

Romancingthestone · 17/10/2026 23:09

My cousin had one as large as a baby’s head cut out privately.

I had one under 5cm so no one would see me beyond selling a coil as treatment.

After 2 years and a medical problem for something else entirely it just went and periods returned to normal and the heavy rotten feeling just disappeared. I was catheterised twice as in patient for various medical problems the significant time I got relief hospital staff said they saw something in the catheter bag but wouldn’t show me.
