Suddenly I have a tummy…

Hi everyone

I've always been of a larger build but recently (say in the last few months) I’ve developed a more pronounced tummy which I’m finding it so difficult to shift. I don’t know if it’s bloating or whether I’m retaining fat differently these days. I’ve just turned 40 and have also just stopped taking the combined pill. I don’t tend to weigh myself but I do fluctuate weight wise (half a stone or so) but can usually kick any additional weight/shape I’m carrying over a couple of weeks by being sensible with food and getting back to my normal exercise routine - this just isn’t working at the moment for some reason.

I just feel like something’s changed but I don’t know what….

Anyone experienced anything similar or have any advice?!

Are you pregnant

RandomMess · 14/10/2026 19:48

I would be asking to be checked out for ovarian cancer tbh. It could be the start of peri but you are on the younger side for that.

Or ovarian cyst.

It could be just a bit of weight gain or some digestive issues but it's worth seeing GP to rule out anything like ovarian cancer. I don't mean to scare you. It's probably not that but I think it's always worth investigating because bloating is one of the few symptoms and it's often missed/dismissed.

I was diagnosed with Stage One Ovarian Cancer 6 years ago.
My only symptoms were a swollen stomach, but I was very overweight and just put it down to that, I have always carried my weight around my stomach area.
It all happened very fast and diagnoses to major surgery was only 5 weeks.
I had an ovarian tumour that weighed 50lb!

Worth getting checked out but I hit 40 and weight started sitting differently. Stopping the pill will also be a hormonal change.

Please see your gp asap and have a pelvic exam.

I'm very sorry to hear about your Ovarian cancer @fudgesmummy and I hope that you are now 5 years free from it 🙏
But did you really mean that your tumour weighed 50lb, or is that a typo? I just can't get my head around a 50lb tumour in your uterus 🙀

fudgesmummy · 16/10/2026 23:37

@PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting
I am completely well now thank you,
When I had the surgery I had a complete hysterectomy, including removal of my womb, cervix and both ovaries and fallopian tubes and my appendix.
And on the way out they repaired an umbilical hernia!
And no, not a typo, my ovarian tumour weighed 50lb!
I lost 3 stone in weight in the 5 hours I was on the operating table
The Surgeon (who looked about 15!) said it was the high light of his career the sound the tumour made when it hit the bottom of the bucket! 😳😬😆

Thank you everyone for the advice, it is appreciated as I never even thought it could be something such as what a lot of you have mentioned. I am having one of those Nuffield Health 360+ checks in a couple of weeks (as part of my medical cover through work) and will mention it to the GP there as they are always very good at writing referral letters very quickly for further tests (in my previous experience).

@WatermelonKiwi
That sounds good, remember it’s very, very unlikely to be anything serious.
My personal experience was very unusual, I was the talk of the hospital!! 😁
