Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) - any experiences?

Hi all - I hope you are well.

My DH has had a bulged disc in his cervical spine (neck) for several years and battled through the pain alongside some conservative treatment but a recent MRI has revealed the bulge has worsened slightly causing more compression on nerve endings.

His consultant has basically said it is not going to get better and he should consider Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery whilst he is relatively young and reasonable shape (he will argue good shape lol).

Has anyone had this or anyone close to them? He is mainly concerned about the recovery and what is realistic to return to activities as there is mixed information on the net!

Any advice appreciated

Yes, I had this operation 10 years ago, after fracturing my C6 and 7 vertebrae in an accident. I recovered well and got back to all my usual activities. I had to wear a neck brace for 3-4 months afterwards, which was restrictive, but he may not need to. Moving about as much as possible - walking initially and pilates later on - helped me a lot. Do ask if you have any further questions and I'll try to remember though it's all a bit of a blur now.
