Hi, I have just received a letter saying my 2nd recent smear was abnormal and I need to have a colposcopy. I received a leaflet along with it but wondered if anyone can tell me what it is like from personal experience.
Am waiting for appointment for one now.
Bit scared to be honest, not just about procedure but the implications.

Yes I had one. Was absolutely fine, honestly didn't feel a thing. Results came back that it was just some inflammation which would heal on it's own.

Good luck and try not to worry-the smear tests pick up every little thing, that's why they are so great!

I've just had my 2nd one. Had one last year, after 2 abnormal smears. The lovely female dr took a biopsy (just a little uncomfortable, spotted for 2 days after) and the results were back within the month that said a minor abnormality which often resolves on its own, to repeat colposcopy in a year. Which I did a month ago, and got exactly the same results again, so back I go again in June 2009! It took about 10-15 mins to do, and to be honest I feel reassured that whatever it is that is happening is being kept an eye on.

Hi, had similar experience about 10 years ago. Was really worried when I got the letter but the procedure was fine and haven't had a single problem since.

Another reassurance here: I've had a few and all fine, if a little unedifying: sit at the edge of a chair and put feet in stirrups and then they use something to see the surface of the area. If you're not very squeamish, it's actually quite interesting!

I had one about 9 years ago, it showed up some abnormal cells so I had to go and have a loop cone diathermy under general.

I was an out patient and in and out in a day, fine really

Ok i had this too, it was fine honestly. I went for the coplospcopy, and was in a bit of a state, not because it hurt, it really didn't but because i hate any type of thing that makes me feel undignified. I then went back for loop diathermamy which i think is where they anthetise the cervix and burn part out. You can have it under genreal or local - i chose local and lots of valuumn and i was as cool as a cucumber. The valummn worked wonders!

It's fab that they are so on the ball with it. It's probably nothing, but they like to whip out anything that looks like it could turn into something in a few years. Good luck
