To go or not to go. Holiday UTI lottery

I usually have a UTI around once every 12-18 months. They come on quickly (within 2 hours) but I take a seven day course of antibiotics-nitrofurantoin and it starts to resolve in a few hours. I carry spare meds with me wherever I go just in case.

A week last Friday I felt one come on so I took a week of antibiotics and it cleared. However, tonight it’s come back. I’ve never had one recur so quickly before. Out of hours has told me to start a second course and I will but…..I’m due to go on holiday to Spain on Friday for 12 days and I’m worried that if I finish this course and it comes back again, I’ll be abroad with an unresolved UTI. I have insurance etc.

Has anyone ever taken a second course and it’s been ok? Would you go? DH works so hard and he deserved a holiday. I’d be devastated to have to cancel.

I would go. Healthcare in Spain is good. Just remember to tell your insurance as otherwise it will be invalid if you don’t declare it.

You can get antibiotics for UTI on the shelf in Spain. You’d probably be in better hands for urgent help than here. I would go

Get some spare before you go.
Have you thought about taking Hiprex? It’s definitely helping me….
And yes go on holiday!

I had this once. UTI came back after ending first lot. GP would only give me 3 days worth, I explained I was going on a cruise, he gave me 2 lots of 3 days worth but to only take 2nd lot if needed. As it happened I didn't need them.

Go, but do be sure to let your insurer know before you set off otherwise you risk them denying your claim, should you have to make one.

Hiprex sounds perfect

You’ll probably get better healthcare in Spain anyway, I’d definitely still go

Lindtnotlint · 13/10/2026 20:56

Definitely go. Deal with it in Spain if you have to.

Penstick · 13/10/2026 20:58

I'd go, but you will need to tell insurance about thepre existing condition..

Thank you all!

We’re going. GP thinks I was just unlucky. I’m nervous but can’t bring myself to not go.

I let the travel insurance company know so if it flares up again while we’re out there I should be fine. I’m taking cystopurin with me in industrial quantities just in case.

Let your insurance know just in case.
However you can access free healthcare in Spain on their NHS. Look for a Centro de Salud. Usually a grey grim building. Take your passport, GHIC and be armed with Google translate. Treatment is free and you just pay for prescriptions.
