Private GP, prescriptions ?

I'm not happy with my GP, so I'm thinking about going to a private GP.
I'm in England, & get free prescriptions because of my age.
Does anyone know if they'll still be free if issued by a private GP, please ?

No, they'll be private prescriptions so you'll need to pay whatever each item costs.

CMOTDibbler · 11/10/2026 09:56

You’ll pay full private cost for everything- blood tests, medication (some is pretty cheap, others not so much at all), x rays etc. If you have repeat prescriptions you can keep them going through your NHS gp though- my dh does this but then sees our private gp for everything else and referrals using our private health insurance

No. You will have to pay for everything, including the cost of the medication and the dispensing fee.

AnnaMagnani · 11/10/2026 09:59

No, you will be paying the cost of the item plus any fee the pharmacy chooses to add.

Sometimes the NHS is inadequate and people are rightfully unhappy with the service they get. But it can be a wake-up call when they realise what they will have to pay otherwise, and what good value for money the public service provides when it’s well managed.

What medication do you need , have you tried seeing another NHS GP. You'll pay for a private prescription but if it's an essential med then the private doctor may write to your nhs Dr for repeats.

Silverbirchleaf · 11/10/2026 10:10

No, you will pay. Usually a dispensing fee and the cost of the meds, plus the cost of the appointment.

HorNouse · 11/10/2026 10:14

Have you tried another NHS GP, either in your own practice or can you change to another practice?

Onceuponatimethen · 11/10/2026 11:17

We use Doctorcareanywhere and you can’t get private prescriptions free. You can find out the cost before you decide whether to buy and if extortionate can go back to nhs for an appointment and then just file for repeats.

Nope.
However, I have twice seen a private specialist when banging my head against a brick wall with the GP. On both occasions the specialost has written to the GP noting optimal medication and titration. The GP had then agreed to prescribe in accordance with the specialist's advice. Once in relation to HRT and once in relation to Levothyroxine dose.

I’ve had a (nice) NHS GP prescribe me medication that a private doctor has recommended before although generally stuff that is quite cheap or that they might have prescribed themselves. It depends on how nice they’re feeling though!

Private GP need to be paid. So no it's not free.

She's not asking about the cost of the private GP appointment, though, but about the cost of the private prescription, which will be determined by the pharmacy.

Maybe just ask the private GP what the charges are

I've had private consultants prescribe medications, taken the prescription to my GP (which has a pharmacist in house) and they have turned it into an NHS one for me.

But I live in a very affluent area and lots of people go private so I think the GPs appreciate the savings the practice makes.
