Weird virus with hives, any other families had this? Pic

I had a cough/cold type thing start about a month ago, ran what felt like its usual course. But weeks later I feel fine during the day but every evening I get a thumping headache and sore throat. I’m so fed up feeling ill.

About ten days after I came down with it it, DS (10) got a bit of a cough then woke up one morning with massive hives all over his torso!

Doctor said it was urticaria most likely triggered by a virus. The hives disappear completely during the day and like clockwork reappear (in different positions) every evening at about 8pm- it’s so odd. He feels fine in himself though. 8 days of this and counting.

No hives for me. I did a Covid test when I was first unwell but it was negative. We haven’t tested DS.

Anyone else had anything similar?

My DH got hives with german measles years ago.

I have also had this strange virus, OP.
I've had a bad chest and broke out in full body hives for about 5 nights consecutively which stopped 2 days ago.
Super itchy, kept me up at night!
Similar other symptoms you've detailed, also.

Yes I had this as well finally recovering. Nausea itchy hands and feet and the weird moving hives!

I also have hives after a cold, on my chest and a bit on my back. I thought it was in response to codeine but I stopped the codeine a day ago. The pharmacy said to take antihistamine and see GP if it hasn't gone tomorrow. Which I doubt it will! Never had it before like this.

Lookatheskies · 12/10/2026 21:52

Unscientific but could be worth eating low histamine foods to help reduce histamine overload and see if it helps. Thats my next step.

My DD always had hives with a virus when she was younger. It was how I knew she was coming down with something. Give him antihistamine and I hope he feels better soon.

One of my kids had this post virus for a whole year! Try an antihistamine like loratadine— it is non drowsy and safe (my kid was prescribed an off-label high dose to take for months on end!)

Wow! My son is Loratadine all summer anyway for hayfever, so we already have a prescription. I’m convinced this is viral not allergy but my reading suggests that kids with allergies can be more prone to this sort of reaction to a virus.

how DS you know when it had gone away @slugjelly did you just stop every now and again to see?

one of my DDs regularly got viral rashes when she was younger. She’s not had one for a couple of years. Once they looked just like your DSs and spread to her face, it was really painful for her but passed after a few days.

Thatsnotmynameno · 14/10/2026 03:22

I had this a lot as a kid and GP was never able to diagnose the cause.
Funny enough, since giving birth 2 years ago it has recurred a few times. Going through it now since Saturday. Hives traveling up my body, woke up swollen yesterday and it's starting to settle now. I'm assuming it's post viral as I didn't feel well last week.
Poor boy, hope he feels better soon. Is it itchy and burning?

@HotCrossBunplease pretty much!
