Packing for colonoscopy prep in a hotel

I posted before about travelling to a colonoscopy 3+ hours away. I've now decided to stay in a hotel the night before. Anything specific I should pack?

I'll be doing the prep there. I have spare clothes, bed pads, a hot water bottle (heard it can be cold), large flask to make up the prep. What else do I need?

Just water and lemon/lime cordial to add to the prep and the water, (you'll be fasting), extra toilet roll, sudocrem or vaseline.

I always buy a pack of Aldi (or wherever) pull up incontinence pants. Not the pads, actual pants like swimmers or pull up kids nappies only adult size. They are amazing, and give great confidence when in bed, and when on the way to the hospital in case of accidents!

Pretty much this! Have never used the pants for this purpose but a good idea.
Reading material for sitting on the toilet 😂
If possible something to chill the prep, so an ice pack for the flask. Hopefully hotel room has a fridge.
I've had a few scopes and another soon. All the best, I hope it goes okay for you.

Thanks both! I've booked a "premier plus" room in the local premier inn as it has a fridge.

Forgot the orange high juice - I'll put that in now!

And I know you have sudacreme and Vaseline but I would definitely get some anusol type cream. My nether regions were burning after being on and off the loo for so long. The anaesthetic properties were very soothing. Even if you don't use it I'd take it.

Straws for the prep, it helps to get it nearer to the back of the mouth before swallowing. Moist flushable toilet wipes as they are soothing when wiping. Lucozade sport orange was a godsend for me as it was classed as clear fluid and helped prevent dehydration.

Warm clothes and socks. I went really cold when the things started to move and I struggled to get warm. I was wrapped in a blanket with a hw bottle.

Need ice cold water for prep so chilled bottled water or iced water from bar?
Also a power bank when your phone battery dies .

Take a mug, teaspoon and a jar of Bovril, you'll need to drink plenty of fluids and it's lovely to have something hot. It's okay to drink Bovril, if you like it of course, I have had numerous colonoscopies due to ulcerative colitis.
A pack of baby wipes for your bum holy that you can keep in the mini fridge also I suggest bepanthen rather than sudocrem, more soothing and doesn't leave the area white!

How did it go?

DownByTheLakeWhereTheWatermelonsGrow · 21/10/2026 21:49

@Rockfrock it was OK, thanks for asking. The prep was unpleasant but way better than I feared. I was expecting nausea and cramps but it was nothing like that, just 2-3 hours of being stuck on the toilet.

The actual procedure was alright too. A bit uncomfortable but not as painful as I thought.

Everything looked normal. A polyp was removed and they took 10 biopsies, so I'm waiting on the results.
