DD16 suffers from PMS. Symptoms can go for 2 weeks or one week; they vary but general feeling low, insecure, tired, loss appetite, life isn’t worth living, etc. It is GCSE year and I think she needs to feel her best. We are trying vitamins, excercise, improving gut health; but I think she needs something else.

She doesn’t want to try contraceptives.

Will hypnotherapy, accupunture help?

She tried evening primrose oil for a few days before last period and not sure if it was coincidence but her period was actually worse with cramps and vomiting which had not happened in 4 months.

the 2 weeks is a red flag for me and suggests PMDD.

DD suffers from this and took an eternity to receive a diagnosis and start on a medication regime that works. I hope it isn’t in your daughter’s case but it is worth considering. Early intervention can make all the difference to her quality of life and yours too, if so.

Thank you. What medication is she having and which were the symptoms? How was she diagnosed?

We have been to the doctors a few times in the last year and DD doesn’t want to go back.

I am not sure if the symptoms are bad enough for PMDD; they vary; some months are better than others

There is a cascade that the medical profession may try Including Contraceptive pills/SSRIs/Mirena Coil/GnRH injections.

She has a very severe case and has injections every three months to surpress ovulation.

its good that her symptoms are not severe and I didn’t mean to concern you. All gynaecologists suggest keeping a symptom diary to track how menstrual cycle affects mood and there are a number of simple ones online. If you do go back to the GP at any stage to discuss her PMS, then it’s good to be armed with evidence.

As for natural remedies, the only thing that has really helped ease the symptoms were the usual suspects: balanced diet, plenty of exercise, good sleep and limiting alcohol. I think this stands for PMS too.

Could have written this about my now adult daughter. She’s on citalopram. It’s working up to a point but there’s still a long way to go. Just to add, the pill did nothing for her, just made her symptoms worse.
