Dry Eye

My eyes have increasingly felt dry and gritty. The optician has diagnosed dry eyes and MGD and advised lubricant eye drops for the daytime and ointment for nighttime - together with a warm eye compress. Possibly due to cataract surgery 6 months ago and general ageing.

Has anyone got experience of this - does it improve and any tips to help?

Nothing to add really. The warm eye mask does help.

Exactly, it's a pita. I got an electric eyemask and you can get hycosan intense and hylo night on prescription. Still doesnt help massively. Was better in the summer.

I use the Hycosan eye drops, and the ointment at night. I think the dry eyes are as a result of wearing contact lenses, and menopause. A few women I know are complaining of dry eyes. Mine are still dry unfortunately. Don't know if there's a long term solution OP, sorry!

I had a similar issue and used the Hycosan extra eye drops. It did seem to help from my experience.

As others have recommended, Hycosan extra are great drops. Really help my dry eyes.

I've dry eyes as a result of Sjogren's and for me at least, it doesn't "get better", but if I stick to the routine and put the eyedrops in regularly during the day (not just when they "feel" dry, but at set intervals) and use the ointment at night (beware -- all your pillowcases will get stained!) and use the warm wet compress daily, then it keeps at a tolerable level.

Hycosan Intense during the day and night gel ointment at night, heat mask every morning, massage around lashes, then wipe with tea tree wipe. Also make sure you stay hydrated. Alcohol makes my dry eyes worse.

The most important thing is to persevere with the treatment it takes 4-6 weeks to see a meaningful improvement. So a good daily regime is

am: eye mask for 5 minutes - but make sure you'e massaging the MG afterwards to clear the blockages, upwards for the lower lids and downwards for the upper lids. Then put some lubricants in afterwards.

If your eyes feel dry again - more lubricants, even if they don't keep lubricating. Once they do feel dry the inflammatory casade has re-started and that makes your eye even more dry than it was before.

pm if you're on a screen keep lubricating.

before bed: Xailin night ointment.
