Seeing Doctor tonight about pmt - but will I get fobbed off?

I have had it for years, but is definitely worse since Ds2 was born two years ago. I only have psychological effects but it's getting bad enough to think I can't go on if it isn't sorted. I feel angry, irritable, depressed and dissatisfied for a week before my period is due.

What has finally prompted me to make an appointment is for the past two months I have also had it for five days around ovulation!

Will he just fob me off with epo vit b6 etc? all of which I have tried over the years but I don't think I can wait months while trying all the herbal options again. Besides there are so many 'alternative' therapies they would cost a fortune and what works for one may not work for another...

Woodenchair, answering your question to Manxmum (!), I take prozac every day for pms. Not sure it would work as well/at all if you only took it in the pre menstrual phase of your cycle. Would think you would get more chance of side effects that way.And I have to say that prozac has the effect of making me feel 'normal' throughout the month - it smoothes out the extremes I used to have.

Thanks Sounds good, I'll prob be more open to it when I go and see the doc. Glad to hear you found something that helps. I'l love to be rid of it

I am 39 and I used to have RAGING PMT for 2 wks before my period. I tried alsorts of herbal stuff/vits and the pill nothing helped. By accident I found out that cutting back on tea severly reduced my PMT to just being a bit grumpy. (I cut back from an excessive amount to nothing then gradually went back to 2 cups a day) Apparently caffiene (or tannin can't remember) inhibits absorption of b vits and magnesium (lack of which tis not good for PMT). Defo look at your diet, blood suger I think has been mentioned too. What works for one might not work for another.

I suufered from anti natal dep with my first and have been fine hormonally since then as bf for 16 months and became pg with #2 and have been bf'ing since then. (periods have returned) However I'm worried that once I stop bf'ing PMT will come back with a vengence. Bit worried that PMT seems to get worse with age.....

I only have a couple of cups of tea a day and don't drink coffee so don't think I can put it down to caffeine. I'm finding it hard to even hold a conversation and appear 'normal' today I would rather just go back to bed and hide under the covers! some people think that having pmt just means that you get a bit grumpy and irritable not the terrible ups and downs that most of us seem to be experiencing.
oneplusone - any developments yet? (pretty sure they don't reverse themselves)

hi lisa, nope no sign of my period yet. I told DH I am going to buy a test kit if it's not here by the weekend.

I also only ever have 2 cups of tea a day and no coffee so don't think the caffiene thing applies to me. (Gosh we do sound very similar don't we? Are we long lost twins or something?)

My pmt seemed to last the whole weekend (i really was an evil witch to everyone that crossed my path ) but now i feel fine. I'm even wondering now whether it was actually pmt or just the fact that it was the weekend which was making me tense (i have realised i hate the weekends, i much prefer weekdays when i can have my own space, mentally and physically).

Have you taken the prozac yet?

lisasimpson · 04/07/2008 10:45

oneplusone lol at being long lost twins - I am an only child and often thought there was something missing I find the kids seem to play up more at the weekend - playing one against the other sort of thing and I get cross if DH isn't as demanding firm as I would be. I have been the same, Wednesday pretty good, yesterday lousy and today just a bit irritable. However Wednesday night I did have two glasses of wine and apparently alcohol is a big no no when you have pmt!
If I had had the tablets in my hand last night I would have taken one but still haven't cashed in the prescription yet.

I take the prozac everyday and can take two, if I need to PMT.

Magnesium sounds like it's worth taking. I think I will give that a try too.

I also find the mooncup has been great for the pain issue.
