Any vitamin D experts around?

I've been getting lower leg pain for some months, one leg only. My vitamin D level has come back as 45 nmol/L, they say the normal range is 50 - 200. Could my slightly low vitamin D be caused by this? Physio has ruled out shin splints, no other bone pain/soreness.

Sorry I mean could my leg pain be caused by low vit D.

It’s unlikely as 45 is fairly common result particularly through winter months

but not impossible, you are more prone to breaks / fractures with low vit D so may be worth getting an X-ray

I get intermittent pain in my shin and the diagnosis, eventually, was that it was caused by a dodgy hip joint. Pain in a lower limb isn't always what you think it is. Good luck with finding out though!

That is low.

Mine was 52 a few years ago and I had four bacterial and viral chest infections in 6 months.

I started taking 5000iu Vitamin D with K2 and magnesium. I haven't suffered as badly again.

I know that the current belief is that vitamins are useless (xand van tullekens new book) but that was the only difference between winter 22 and winter 23 for me!

Thanks all. Google brings up worrying suggestions with my symptoms, I know it is almost always wrong though!

Well, according to the protocol I use, the optimal level is 200 nmol/L so you're really quite low. Their recommendations are based on the amounts of vitamin D in the blood of people groups who live in hot countries and wear minimal clothing (and don't supplement).

NB The NHS "normal range" means "the range outside of which we're willing to pay to treat" rather than "the range for optimal health"

Leg pain is definitely a possible symptom.

I'd recommend the Nutrient Teams Protocol which tells you how to supplement, what cofactors you need (magnesium is especially essential) and how to test to make sure you get to healthy levels and stay there. You have to sign up, but the basic level is free. They also have a FB group.

We had significant improvements with vitamin D, though leg pain wasn't one of our symptoms.

I'd also recommend Epsom salts in the bath / a footbath (start with a small amount and work upwards). We did see improvements in a family members' leg pain with that. The sulphate in it is actually helpful for vitamin D status because vit D travels through the body in the form of vitamin D sulphate.
